I have recently been playing large amounts of Terraria lately with not many breaks and when I go to sleep I keep on getting a dream about a 2D world made out of blocks :o I've also scanned sides of buildings searching for the best climbing route (AC).

I'm pretty sure when this happens this is the time to stop playing that particular game :p

So who has experienced the Tetris effect?

I used to have day dreams as well as sleeping dreams about World of Warcraft. So like, i'd be at college and kill everyone using my minion and shadow bolt etc. But i'm not sure if i was fantasizing about it while thinking about playing the game or generally would just love to do it in the most unpredictable way possible.

Not sure if that's the Tetris effect.

Once I played so much cricket captain that every time I closed my eyes, images of it just rushed into my head uncontrollably. The Tetris effect is actually a horrible experience :(

The worst one I've had like this is the "Grenades at War" effect. This is something I hope no one else has ever.

Trying to Platinum Call of Duty : World at War (or nick named Grenades at War by so many). The last 2 levels on Veteran was the worlds biggest spamming session of grenades. Every 3 seconds you had to run because a cluster of grenades got lobbed at you, then when you ran you got shot dead instantly. I must have spent about 6 hours trying to clear the last 2 levels.

After completing them at something like 3am, I really needed some sleep. I woke up from a nightmare 8 times that night to the sound of grenades being thrown through my closed window and blowing the room to kingdom come.

I get mild tunnel vision from playing some games but I never want to have the Grenades at War effect ever again!

Sounds nasty

I found a site which shows you the most common games which cause these effects some of the effects are quite fascinating. Mirror's edge is a good one, people apparently see objects glow red :p

I'm an avid fan of Age of Empires II (medieval strategy game) and used to get dreams about that. Like being in-game, occasionally even in 1st person. The monks conversions gave me the creeps so that cropped up in dreams too. Not had any such dreams recently though because I use Windows 7 and the game doesn't work properly under that - colour palette's screwed up.

I got this when I played Portal 2, kept thinking with portals!

Also you can get it from rl things, I once did some maths revision for 5 hours and tried to get to sleep but I just kept thinking about maths.

Just remembered - it happens with Bejeweled as well. Little 3-second snippets appearing in dreams, taking note of exact colours/shapes. On one occasion though, I had a long(ish) dream where I was playing the game at length and the rules kept on changing. Different colours/shapes, different ways of fitting them and different special gems.

Here is the link with the well know examples:

Portal is in there :p

Rofl, they're not kidding!

If you play Beatmania, Dance Dance Revolution, Pump It Up, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, or the like for long enough, listening to music on the radio will start to evoke a picture of a note track, not to mention moving your fingers (or feet) like you're playing the song you're listening to on an invisible controller. Air Guitar Heroing, if you will.

I can remember another one that was an exact classic of that. They used one of the songs from one of the dance games I play on in a TV advert. I didn't notice at first but I started tapping my heels off the floor to the step chart. My mum asked what the hell was I doing, then I noticed what I was doing and started thinking "WTF was that?!". Then I realized that they used Sweet World in the ad and I just had an automatic reaction :o

Everything I do when packing, moving stuff, stacking stuff is done with the Tetris themetune in my head, ow whistled hummed out loud. Seriously.

Went through a period of playing Borderlands for 5-6hours non stop on LAN with my brothers... started seeing everything cel-shaded... wierdness XD

Edit: haha, and this: "How many Left 4 Dead players steer clear of the sound of crying, and twitch when they hear a cough or see someone wearing a hoodie? "

The amount of times when I'd been playing Just Cause 2 I wanted to use a grappling hook for tasks such as getting up hills is probably indicative of some kind of mental ailment.
