Tetris Effect

Minecraft. I start building and destroying in my dreams as the world is part block part real, and in the realworld, I imagine how many blocks roads and paths would take to build and imagine how long it would take to recreate my entire town.

Oof, so many times! Quake 2 was the first game to do this for me, made me literally strafe my way around corners in real life!

MMOs make me visualise red numbers floating above people's heads in the street if I've played them for awhile.

The worst I got it ever though was when I tried to read a book in bed after a marathon session of Burnout 3. I would see individual letters from the book leap from the page and zoom past my head just like the cars I would pass in the game did! It was like reading in warp speed! First and only time in my life I got motion sickness from lying immobile in bed reading a book on solid land.

First experienced this after marathon Civ one sessions on the Amiga. I was dreaming seeing those tiles move around the maps, building cities etc. When I woke up I felt sick and disorientated, a horrible feeling.

The "fun" one though was when I first got Mario Kart. I played it for hours and hours and hours. I resisted the inconvenience of hunger for as long as I could, but then to the kitchen I ran. When I went to go left to get the cutlery, I didn't turn to my left I "steered". When I went to go to the fridge on the right, I "steered" etc. Very odd sensation!

I remember playing Vice city getting all the hidden packages (using a guide) in one sitting.

Took me hours anyways and when I had stopped playing, I was going downstairs to get a drink and do other stuff and I was looking in the corners of rooms for hidden packages. It was really odd.

Had it from Tetris on the N64. Far too many hours wasted on that. Came up with perfect teckers in the end though - you will never win...still be fun though.

I think about Quake sometimes in relation to reallife environments, e.g:

-Best trajectory to shoot grenades in my house so they go down stairs, round corners etc
-Optimal bunnyhopping routes to get around quickly
-Assessing whether a ledge is too high for me to rocketjump up to

I suspect it is something to do with the way our brains are wired to seamlessly perform physics calculations (approximations) in realtime

I remember having Tetris effect, after playing on GB then trying to read. All I could see were the falling Tetris blocks.
Also after playing Syndicate on Amiga. Up all weekend, drinking mushroom soup I seem to remember, that was an experience.
