Texaco

Near where I live there's a road with two Shell garages right opposite each other. Quite often they're not the same price.

I can't work that one out.

My local pumps are Texaco and BP, Texaco has been there over 25 years, always been expensive and still is, hardly ever use it apart from the rare moment when I'm really low and driving on that side of the road.

Cheapest for me, BP and Shell are the most expensive around here.

Same...

There is a Total + Esso garage on the A5, opposite each other with one being lower price than the other. Supermarkets also very cheap.

I still go out of my way to fill up at Shell though. BP seems to be the most expensive.

Are garages franchised? Do they have any independent control over prices?

The only other thing I can think of would be if there's something in one direction that's likely to result in higher demand i.e. a motorway ahead, or a long stretch with no more garages, but unless you're talking about different sides of a dual carriageway with no means of getting easily from one side to the other, even that doesn't make much sense.

Its BP who are always in their own little world re: pricing in my area.

As for the two Shell garages opposite the road to each other with different prices, I suspect one of them was a different brand at some point. Shell possibly took over/bought that forecourt in order to reduce competition, and why not put a higher price in one of them - I bet there still are people filling up there who didn't see/<insert reason> the cheaper one across the road.

Same thing goes on with Ebay - some sellers have different listings for the same product at slightly different prices. Once in a while someone doesn't look carefully and buys the expensive listing

A lot of people don't care for prices and simple shop for convenience.

If a petrol station also have a decent shop then the fuel price difference of £1-£2 a tank is really insignificant for some people

Exactly, people get way too hung up about 2p or 3p difference in fuel.

For me it's the nearest place with pay at the pump.

Wow that was taken a while ago, look at the price of unleaded! I can't remember it being under £1.10 a litre!
Says September 2009 ;)

Surely it's come down a bit over recent weeks?
In Belgium it used to be £1.42 for SUL and now it's £1.25 for the first time in years.

It's not always 2 or 3p though. Our cheapest in the area is Costco (members only) at 117.9ppl. The cheapest 'normal' garage is Asda at 119.6ppl and then BP and the others are 120.9ppl.

....EXCEPT... The bamboozlingly expensive other BP just around the corner. It's currently 133.9ppl for unleaded and 139.9ppl for diesel. Funny thing is, despite the relative abundance of other filling stations nearby they are always active and I just don't get it. Fair enough they're on the A road but the other BP, Shell, Sainsbury's and Asda are literally a few seconds down the side street and are THIRTEEN pence cheaper per litre. I don't get how they're still in business.

It's the same story on the other side of the city, where in one case there are SIX petrol stations within a few hundred yards of each other (Shell, Esso, BP, Shell again, Costco and others). They are on the exact same stretch of road, often only a few 'doors' down from each other. Despite this, the no-name Johnny Foreigner garage in the middle of them all is 12ppl more expensive than the rest... yet somehow the busiest of the lot. Wut?! :o
