Are there any "good" tutorials for text effects with photoshop?

Im looking to add some text to my logo, and i had a google search and all i found was stuff like "Liquid text effect" "chrome effect" and fireeeeee

Are there tutorials for less of a tacky look and more professional looking text?

If you want it looking professional... Then forget about text effects;) They all look naff.

Just find a good, simple font.

If you go into the character palette you can adjust all the spacings and tweak some other stuff.

But if you are looking for effects...

Right click on the text layer and rasterise it. This will allow you to treat it the same as any image based layer and do what you like to it, apply filters etc. Text won't be editable of course.

or...

In layers palette, double click on the blank area to the right of the layer name. This brings up a layers properties palette, you can apply things like drop shadows, stroke, inner/outer glows, textures etc...

As per Stupot, personally I'd avoid text effects for Logos on the whole as they do tend to look a bit naff.

Also, if possible, it'd be much better to create your logo in Illustrator or similar so the whole thing is in vectors, that way you'll be able to export it to any size you like and it'll be perfect, unlike in Photoshop where it'll need resizing which can compromise the quality.

Of the two, I personally would go for something like the first one (with the 'i' cutout) It;s nice and simple and would easily translate into a single or two colour logo if you wanted to use it for other print work/ stickering etc.

The 3d logo looks quite good but would be harder to get looking good as a single colour print job etc.

No reason why your logo must have an image that relates to what you do. Think of all the classic supremely well known logos and have a think about how many have an image that relates to what they do... Coca-cola, nike, reebok etc etc etc

Yeah sorry it wasn't about the logo in that link, just the text.

I was thinking about using say the text effect from the first link, and the random name im using is promadic i was thinking of say turning the o into a power switch or something like that, with the 3 quarters of a o with a line threw the top, and then half way above the text (or comming off the top of the M) a power cable comming up?

But before i can get started i need to find a text effect that has a tutorial *photoshop newb*

Well, I'd decide on a font that you want to use first. I like the idea of the power switch, would be pretty simple to do too.

I think the key to logos is to keep them really simple!

I take it the switch will be as simple as putting a "c" turning it on it's back, then an "l" and doing the same?

Because what ever style/effect i find and want to use, i want the power switch to match it

You could do it that way, or you could use an O, rasterise it, remove the area you want, then draw a line in the gap.

If you create anything like dropshadows etc you can apply them to any of the layers you have so effects will be on everything and match.

Those text effects would be easier to recreate with the pen tool i am sure. The thing with logo design is to keep it simple, think about the medium it will have to appear on like letters, business cards etc and consider it at all different sizes to make sure it looks cool. Also makes sure it looks cool in black and white.

Cheers for the help guys.

One quick thing tho, how long does it take (On average) for a new website to appear on google?
