Text messaging is destroying conversation

At least, in my experience. Last night a whole hoo-haa kicked off over some stupid crap that was misinterpreted by text messages that got delivered the wrong way round.

A while I go I flat refused to discuss anything over text, but there are some people I just cant trust to tell me things to my face.... god knows why. The problem with texts is they just aren’t interpreted as *you* want them to, and what use is that in a discussion? There's no tone of voice, facial expressions or emotion.... it's just not good enough. Fwiw, this seems to only apply to females.

Dont get me wrong, text messaging has it's place ("Running late, mine's a Strongbow"), but I fear that with the younger generation being exposed to, and relying on the technology, the necessity of discussion will be lost and people will forget how to communicate.

Anybody else experience this?

Psh stop being so emo.

:p

Agree though, I never text anything that could in any way be misconstrued, far too much opportunity for misinterpretation!

yeah absolutely. I've had some things taken totally the wrong way on text. MSN and email too - read back something I've sent and realise that although the words are right, the tone seems all wrong even with smilies :(

Sometimes read more into what other people have said too - I must rely a lot on voice and body language to interpret what people mean so without it i'm a bit lost.

See my thread! :(

That's why from now on I will only talk to her face to face or phone her if I can't talk face to face on touch'y subjects. :)

its the brean up of so many relationships.

i had a massive argument with some guy over a txt i put "heh" in the text he thought i was trying to be better than him at everything? god knows how he got that idea?

it basically came down the point he annoyed me so much i said i dont wanna ever socialise with him again, and hes a complete ******* idiot.

thats what happens over texts.

Written communication always lacks the conveyance of tone and body language and is easier to misinterpret than face to face speech.
Such misinterpretations are commonplace (be they deliberate or otherwise) in SC.

Dunno but i seem to get on fine with text messages most of the time, my problem is my gf likes to take things the wrong way but then thats women for you...always taking things the wrong way...or perhaps she still hasnt quite grasped my sense of humour.

But then im not dumb enough to have a serious convo with someone via text messages...if anything texts are used to let people know that im running late...or to say hi....never use them to have a conversation tbh

had a few fallings out over text misinterpretation. mainly my fault. over reaction to summit that meant something totally different.

dont think my reaction helped like. running into room going "wtf is this supposed to mean?????  "

Written communication has it's place of course, but when you have other (better) methods, and when the conversation piece is reasonably important/personal... why do people still resort to text? Is it generational?

I send texts because I'm quite anti-social at times. And for some reason, I hate phone calls and chats - although sometimes when I do get involved in a good chinwag, I really enjoy it and think I should do it more often.

Can provide a handy means of 'escape' though.

'Ah you see, that wasn't what I meant'

Dug me out of a hole this morning in fact :p

Well, being born in 1905 you certainly cant blame the generation gap... :p

Text messages would be better if they were fully punctuated.

Always easier to read a fully worded and punctuated sentance than some random pile of letters covering 20 thoughts without a full stop yet alone a paragraph! :p

Regardless though, if you had something important to say, are you happy to say it over text?
