Text to Speech / Voice synthesizer

I want to create some sound bites (eg Launching Winamp, launching firefox etc) and rather than record them myself (obviously I don't want to scare my guests) was wondering if there's a decent way of doing this ?

There's Microsoft Anna in Speech Properties in Windows 7; I think there was a choice of three in Vista, and Microsoft Sam in XP - any of those do?
