hi all, i'm just wondering about how expensive etc it is to send texts to a friend of mine who's staying in columbia for a short while. She will have a columbian mobile phone that she's borrowing from a friend. Is it possible from o2 and how much does it cost to send / receive ?

also, should i get some sort of bolt on to get free texts abroad?

edit: arrgh, sorry meant to post this in mobile forum (i guess that's the best place for it), please could a friendly mod move it.

Probably about 40-50 pence. If you're going to be texting her a lot, you can buy an international call and ext bolt-on for O2 (£5 I think) which allows you to send texts for about 10 pence and call from around 15 pence per minute.

Which equals 40 to 50 pence! :p

Try this OP: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-to-sms/

You can send an email to their carrier's SMS gateway - and they receive as a text, while costing you nothing.

I use it all the time to text friends in Alaska and Germany. They can reply to the text too, you receive it as an email. Though not sure if it will cost any more/less than a normal text for your friend. Both my friends have free international texting.

I had a similar "issue" a couple of years back. I was the one that was away however so I just texted the people from my in country sim card and got the people to text back to my normal sim. That way they don't pay more and I only pay a little more (which was paid for by the company)...
