Ok so I replaced my 8800GTX with a 4870 512MB

All games are fine at 1920x1200 4xAA generally, although with TF2 it will run really smooth 100fps+ at all times but at a random interval during the first few minutes of a new map I will get a lockup with sound stuttering for a couple of seconds.... The graphics pause at this time, and then a few seconds later the game recovers and then it will be back to normal.

It seems to be some sort of pre-caching problem, possibly driver related, i'm still on 8.6 hotfix atm, will try 8.7 later.

Anyone else get this problem ?

Never had this issue with the 8800GTX.. Does TF2 possibly store anything in the config files that may still relate to the 8800 ?? I did a full safe removal of all old NVidia drivers + driversweeper in safe mode etc.

I play TF2 a lot (>20 hours a week) and I dont get this issue as you describe it.

On rare occaisions I experience it but it isnt related to the start or early in a map and I dont get it on every game.

Try doing a disk defrag in Windows, and letting Steam defrag the .gcf files internally. Might help a bit.

cheers, steam did report quite substantial fragmentation on the TF2 app, so i'll let it sort that out, then do a normal windows defrag and see what happens !

The last time I had this was in HL2 Ep2, and it was the nvidia network access manager. Doesn't look like you have that from your spec, but it may be worth going on a firewall killing spree just to see what the score is.

Hey Mortster,

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, I used to get this with my 7900GT but now I'm using your 8800GTX I think it has gone. When the stutter occurred it also used to terminate any steam friends voice chat that was active...

The lockup with sound looping occurs when the video driver has crashed. If you're using Vista then it usually recovers after about 10 seconds or so and you can continue on, not so sure about XP though (BSOD possible I guess).

I have had the issue in Windows XP and Vista, but game continues without crashing after the stutter has ceased.
