TF2 the engineer

Why are you guys acting like this game is something new or original? Do you not realise that this is just a continuation of the Team Fortress genre? (and what looks like a bad one at that). The game has been in 'production' for 10 years after Valve effectively abandoned TFC in favour of CS despite it being one of the most popular online games of all time. Now suddenly everything is all rosey...

This game seems like a dumbed down version of Team Fortress... There are no grenades, no concs, and from the gameplay videos it looks as if there is no bunnyhopping either. Some of the key elements that attributed to the fast, non stop rollercoaster style gameplay that made TFC so popular have been left out.

From what I have seen there is very little scope for competitive gameplay consistent with the Team Fortress genre. 8vs8 with 4 offense and 4 defense just doesn't seem plausible when traditional offense classes look as if they are rendered useless (Scout and Medic). Without concs and bunnyhopping the scout is actually useless. And I don't know how you are meant to get to the other side of the map fast enough to capatalise on a defender being out of position without a conc.

I will still give it a try but I am far more interested in Fortress Forever (www.fortress-forever.com) which is a HL2 Team Fortress mod which is being made (or has been made) by the Team Fortress community. In my opinion it is shaping up to be a far more enjoyable game with much more scope for competitive play and keeps with the true concepts of Team Fortress which made it so popular.

It seems very strange that when word of the community taking matters into their own hands after years of pestering Valve to update TFC, or just to release TF2, Valve suddenly have got their act together and produce a game. It is unfortunate now that both TF2 and FF are being released at the same time (Valve decided to annouce a beta will be available on 17th Sept just hours after FF posted on their site they would be releasing the mod on 17th Sept, coincidence?).

It is unlikely a 3rd party mod will ever be able to compete against the marketing power Valve has, even if it is a much better game. It would be such a shame if a mod of this calibre (which is free to all HL2 owners btw) fails because of the sheer marketing power Valve has.

Take a look, spread the word, and give FF a try. FF is the most proffessional mod I have ever seen and with the amount of careful planning and consideration that has gone into it, I don't think it's going to disappoint.

I fully intend to play both TF2 and FF ... :)

... Been waiting for this bus for years and now 2 come at the same time ... hurrah ! :D

No bunnyhopping is a bad thing? Bunnyhopping is what killed off QWTF (along with the source code release, but there were ways around that). I'll be glad to see gren spam gone. And from the look of it, TF2 is going to be a lot faster gameplay than the alternatives.

I don't know about TFC, but in QWTF it was entirely possible to skip past a defence and grab a flag as scout, without bunnyhopping or using a conc. Bunnyhopping is bad for the scout, as his main strength is in his speed, and if other classes are able to negate that by artificially increasing their speed, that's lost. We'll have to see how fast the scout is in TF2.

I've been watching FF for a fair while and I'm certainly looking forward to it. I'm going to give both a try and I think there is room for two TFs. But I'm not going to judge the merits of one against the other without trying either.

Seems very unlikely to be me that Valve are conspiring against FF, especially as the devs themselves have said Valve have been very supportive throughout development. Let's, as a community, try and give them both a chance.

Unlimited bunnyhopping I agree is bad for the game. However, in TFC (and FF) the maximum speed you can gain is set to a percentage of the class' original running speed. A scout running at normal speed without the additional speed bunnyhopping gives and the increased ability to change direction of movement quickly is an absolute lamb to the slaughter for any semi-skilled Soldier or HWG.
