TFC

blimey, reading through some of my old posts on the TFC archive section there from 2000! We were discussing TF2 in some of them and how the magazines were prediciting a release soon :D Them were the days.

Why hello ther dear [LTD]Veg haha :D

TFC has gone alas, all the good times aswell .... although i think WPTFCL are still running a league, but i really dont know how many people play.

Fortress Forever is the only hope left really!
:D Yo Dark!

I'm sure XSD were a clan I used to play against quite a bit in my early days? might be getting mixed up tho.

Well if you loved CS then loved CSS, it wouldent matter how long it has to go, because TF2 is just around the corner, but my guess is that it has years left in it yet.

I miss playing TFC on wireplay/barryworld
why DID barrysworld go under? I remember when it all went off but can't remember why!

hmm aparently game ground the remainder into the ground
the guys who where there originaly started up somthing called freddyshouse or somthing

The underlying reason why Barrysworld went under was financing. Most people here probably don't remember the early problems, but back in early '99 or thereabouts there was this big appeal where they desperately needed £18k for a new switch, it was all over their forum. There was a big appeal and they got a whole bunch of pledges, before eventually they managed to get investment from somewhere.

Anyhow, after holding on for another couple of years they eventually went into partnership with GAME. The problem, of course, was that around that time unmetered internet was starting to take off. Why was this a problem? Simple. Until that point, BW's main source of income was probably from their own 0845 dialup account (which many gamers used because you were dialled directly into their network hence lower pings). With the move to unmetered (0800/0808 etc) isp and broadband, fewer and fewer people used their dialup. Eventually they brought in a subscription model which made people pay-to-play; and maybe another year down the line GAME decided to pull the plug.

The problem was of course that those of us who had been using BW since 1998, (pre halflife, pre Q3 etc - back then the only servers they had were Quakeworld, Quake2 and Tribes iirc) the idea of paying to use their servers was a bit alien. And by then there were plenty of quality alternative servers available from many other providers, it wasn't like the old days where BW was pretty much the only place you could guarentee good pings and a high calibre of opponent (although some Wireplayers might beg to differ!).

The bottom line is that BW never really had a sustainable business model in that by the time they started charging, the service they provided had many substitutes available.

WOOOAHHHHHHHH memory flash back. Yup I was the XsD clan leader with Sabo. Christ its weird thinking back all that way. Mp4, what other alias you go under, cant figure out who you are. Oh and yea Mirage you played against us a few times if I recall :)

Think maybe LTD used to play against you a lot, but I was thinking FLC days. I pretty much played as Mirage or Veg/Vegy.

HAz? Was it you that picked me up with Westie to go to i9? :P

Played with Westie in in. - induce and =BC= BodyCount, possibly the best Medic I ever saw.

MartialYin from BIA joined induce and played a massive two times I think :P, but I definately remember [BIA], [NBK-IGC] days, was probably playing in [****] around those times. UKTFCL was a single table back then!

Me and Yin were playing WoW but Yin has stopped playing ( again :P )

Westie wasnt too bad ;) hehe but I prolly would have rated Yin or Monty over him. I guess Westie carried on playing TFC after most of BIA stopped though

Anyone here play in the UKFN QWTF league?

Quality clans such as SG, Mr Men, DIS, CSS, etc etc....

Yeah, I mainly played on Wireplay but also played for some of the net clans occasionally. SG were very good and they kicked out arses every time we played them.

The scariest clan we played against was a Swedish clan. Their entire team was sitting in the same room as each other, on a T1 connection. We were all on dial-up (or, at most, ISDN) and didn't even have anything like Team Speak to communicate with each other. Ouch.

I remember when Halflife got announced. TF2 was originally going to be a mod for Halflife 1, but then it got delayed and TFC was released as a stop-gap. We all bought HL1 so that we could play TF2. We couldn't believe how easy it was to conc jump halfway across the map in TFC or even how the heavy weapons guy could move and fire!
