Hi, I have astudent oyster card and I apparently have to renew it each year. Ok I think, but then realise I have to pay £5 to renew. Im guessing this £5 is to cover a new oyster card - but the one I have is perfectly fine, the picture still a good representation of me, so why do I have to get a new one? Can't they just press "extend for a year" or some equivalent button?

thanks

They have to check you are still a student, and print a new expiry date on the card (Acceptable student ID's for places that give discount oughta have one).

Otherwise all ex-students would be taking liberties :p

Presumably they could make a lot more money by abolishing the student concession and charge you full price for your journeys.

This would have the fringe benefit of stopping people moaning about the near-as-dammit inconsequential £5 charge as well.

Nope - I just have a probelm with people moaning about a small charge for a concession that will save them MANY times that in reduced fares.

The OP could always get a 'standard' Oyster if he dislikes the £5 charge so much. But I suspect he wont.

Sorry, I thought you were referring to the Congestion Charge for some reason.

*slaps forhead*

A charge for the Oyster card isn't that bad, although the other punitive measures surrounding the Oyster card are ridiculous.

Be thankful that you are paying £5 a year to renew but paying half price for a monthly travelcard (or whatever you get). :p It won't last!

If you don't want it - give me your student oyster with zones 1-3 travelcard on it... thanks ;)

Can you expand on that? I've got an oyster and I've found it very flexible rather then having any punative measures attached.

there is no expiry date printed on the card.

visage, i have every right to moan about a fee that is unnecessary. im sure you wouldn't want to throw away money, just the same as I don't.

So presumably you wont be renewing your student Oyster, in order to avoid paying a charge that you feel is unnecessary?

The £5 charge appears to be because there is a different application process to a standard oyster that you can either do on-line or by post. Presumably they now need additional back office staff and are passing a little bit of that cost on to you.

The change in process is probably down to the need to stop all and sundry from applying for it with a dodgy NUS card, which is fair enough.

You get 30% off as a result of the card so i don't think, when putting it in perspective, that it's a huge sum to pay. They could just tell you to pay full price.

If you feel that strongly get the Jubilee line up to Willesden Green and jump on the 266 bus for a few evenings, then you can debate it with Ken on his way home.

yeah i do have big issues with this government. i dont like what they do, and i dont appreciate having to pay twice for something, yes it is a good deal, but could be better.

Did you know that if you're on prepay, and you buzz in to a station, if you then want to leave the same station (say you decided not to take the tube after all), when you buzz out you still get charged for a single zone journey! So, is tfl money grabbing? I'd have to say... YES!
