Thinking of heading off to thailand for a few weeks this summer with my gf...however, we're trying to decide when to buy our plane tickets.

I've done a search online and the cheapest i've found for return tickets is £389...all taxes & fee's included...this is leaving on 16th August and coming back 6th September, cos we want a good 2/3 weeks out there!

However, we're pretty flexible on time around july/august, so we're wondering whether or not to wait until last minute for some cancellation tickets and try and get them dirt cheap...just worried that we may wait and then not be able to get decently priced tickets!

Anyone here travelled over there much at all and do ya know if it's advisable to get the tickets early?!?

The only reason we're thinking of waiting is because some friends of ours got tickets for £120 each when they booked last minute, but that was leaving in march...not peak summer time! Just would be kicking ourselves if we bought tickets now for £400'ish, then found cheaper tickets nearer the time!
 
I was over there last summer and I think that the way you want to work this is as follows. If you are prepared to take whatever you can get to thailand or other places you will most likely find something at the last minute but you are running a decent risk of not getting what you want.

If you have your heart set on thailand then book now and dont look again just go and enjoy the holiday. Thailand is an amazing place and £400 is going to give you an amazing holiday you will never forget.

You just need to decide how much you want to go to thailand.
 
That is a damn good price. Book them at that rate now IMO! You won't get them much lower and do you want to risk blowing your holiday plans for the sake of £30ish each?
 
My girlfriend basically said the same thing, book the tickets now and don't check before we leave, what we don't know can't hurt...or annoy us :D

It does have to be thailand though, it's somewhere we've both been dying to go for years and years!

I should have mentioned, the £400 is just for the flights and is per person, but we've checked hotels and can get 20 days accomodation bed & breakfast for just under £300 between us, so less than £150 each :)

As you've already been, is there anywhere you would especially recommend, we had planned on flying to bangkok...overnight train between chang mai, phuket, phi phi island, ko samui then back to bangkok before we fly out. Obviously it requires a bit of careful planning, but we've planned on a few days in each place, just gotta decide how much time to spend at each one!
 
Just try and go to the least touristy bits you can find and absorb everything the country has to offer. The food there is beautiful so please say you like thai food. Get the lonely planet guide and go from there, that has a lot of good ideas in it

NO DO NOT DO THAT!!!!!

tickets get more expensive closer to the time as the plane fills up.

is that with ethiad, if so fly from gatwick for some onboard wifi goodness.
Accomodation wise, look at all the options take a look at apartments as well as hotels, also see if you can book flights instead of trains as it will be quicker, not sure about pricing.
There are a few low cost carriers.

I am going there in JUL too :)

LOVE thai food...half the reason we're ging is for the cuisine, it's one of the things we're most looking forward to about the holiday :D

Maybe i'm being thick..."onboard wifi goodness" :confused: he he

I didn't think about looking at apartments, we just looked at hotels via the Statravel.co.uk site, as my gf is a student, she gets quite a discount if she books via that site.

We don't mind travelling by train, we're more of the backpacking sort than the hotel and laze around sort...if possible we're going to overnight train it between destinations to get more of a feel for the country and also to save a few nights accom fees! ;)

gimme a few minutes and I will see what hotels are around, how long you wanna spend in each place?
