I don't post too often on these forums but i felt this deserved a post.
I'm currently doing my final year project at university and i have got to the stage where i am researching audio compression formats for my home streaming media system i am hopefully going to implement.
After much research about patent issues with MPEG technology i have decided, thanks to linux, to use Ogg and FLAC instead. I haven't fully experimented with them yet but from my first impressions i think it is amazing they are available entirely for free, with available implementations ready to go! No grey areas surrounding them or anything.
If it weren't for my recent installation and joy with ubuntu i would probably have paid for a license to use MP3 just to ensure the ethical basis of my project. And for those that think i'm crazy for streaming FLAC then yeah your right, i am.
