"Thanks"

What like? One of the metro's slipping you one on the quick at a meet?
I certainly hope not!

I dunno, perhaps some gift vouchers that could be used towards the cost of some new hardware.

Isn't there a rep system in vBulletin already?

I've seen it on at least a couple of other boards (e.g. TSR).

I guess that's not exactly what was suggested in the OP though.

That "thanks" system sounds like a really good idea to me. You only get a rating for being helpful, not for sarcasm, humour, banter or PC+1 :)

The Karma system has the same disadvantage as ebay feedback IMO - retaliation.

Well anything you do in vBulletin is a hack I think? The trust script used here would have been, and it's a way simpler job than that.

the trust idea was a hack it was meant to be an ebay rating alike system, you can find these mods on vbulletin.org ,

but does sound like an idea

I like the idea. Although the functionality is already implemented in the "Trust" system, they just need to make the person's "score" more visible - i.e. in the bit where Post Count is. That'd make people use the Trust system more if somebody is helpful or trolls. Of course though, whenever you have a disagreement with somebody they are going to give you a negative vote - so perhaps only positive votes should be allowed.

Solution 1: Only allow positive votes.
Solution 2: Don't make visible the information about who voted for who. That way they won't know who to "retaliate" to.

I too like the idea.. but because an idea is liked by the majority does not mean its the best.

It could spur users to help their fellow members more, but then i fear that OcUK's server wont have enough memory to hold the number that GordyR's thanks counter will need.

The trust system as far as i know is better off left as it is for the members who sell and buy on the forum.. not for general thanks to problems.

I think it's a fantastic idea. As NathanE already put most of it, it would be best implemented if
  1. Only positive results counted; only "thanks," no "no thanks"
  2. Thanks are visible but the thankers are not.
  3. No thanks could be given for Members' Market activity
That way you could count on your ability to annonymously give someone thanks for what they've done for you. If you want to tell someone about it, tell them in the thread or chuck them an email.

That said, I don't think it'll ever happen. OcUK does not need to risk breaking anything just to add a warm-and-fuzzifying feature.

I think it's a great idea. I don't think it should be used to replace trust system but to complement it. I also think it shouldn't be used for the MM, but just as a way to say thanks if someone answered a difficult problem you were having and you want to show your appriciation.

A simple number below the postcount would be ideal.

Pretty sure the trust system doesn't use any file hacks at all, it's just tied in via template changes. Other than a shared authentication resource, it has it's own database, and runs on an entirely different server.

Another website i read has a 'karma' style thing, goes up when you get a good report and down when you get a bad one, and it works really well.

Its an option i would liek to see, although established members know whos good for what usually anyways.

You could just say thanks... Most people on here that are helpful enough get noticed by pretty much everyone for it anyway so tbh who needs a system.
