Hi

Seen a camera i want on that famous auction site. I have not used the auction site before so just need a few things cleared up.

The item has 0 bids. if i bid say £100 can others see the bid ? What happens if someone bids say £50 and i win the auction with my previous bid of £100 ? Do i pay the full 100 ?

Thanks

Bidding is done in increments, however you can place a high bid (proxy bid)

For example,

If the camera starting price was £20, and you bid £100, it would show you placing the first bid of £20 and currently winning. No-one, including the seller, will see the maximum you have bid.

If someone then came along afterwards, and bid £50, you would still be winning, but at the next increment above the other persons bid - £55 or so (sure it's 5 quid increments after 50, but might be 2) as ebay will automatically bid incrementally within your maximum bid.

so you enter your £100 bid, the current bid is say £3 so you "bid" is £4.00 or whatver
someone else comes along and bids £50, because YOU bid £100 your still winning but now the items bid is £51.00.
this will go up every time someone adds a bid up till your total is exseeded (ie somone else bids £101) then someone elses max bid will be winning

so in your initial post, the £50 bid would still be superseeded by your £100 bid, but you would ONLY pay £51 (or whatever) rather than your MAX bid
basicaly you enter your max bid and the software plays you off against other peoples max bids

2 of you say 2 different things. hmmm

It is done all incrementally, with the maximum bid never revealed as i replied above.

I've been trading on the 'bay for 6 years now, and I always recommend to read all the guides on ebay themselves for a full explaination of how it all works. It's all very clear and straightforward.

Excellent. Never used it before so i am giving it a go me thinks. Even if im pretty sure the bid wil be out bid for sure.

Thanks :)

sadly most people use sniper software to put in bids in the last 1/2 second etc

Your best bet is to offer well over the asking price and insist on paying by Western Union money transfer. Sellers like that.

Put in the maximum that you will be willing to pay for it.To see if you are wasting your time look at completed listings to see how much they go for.
