So Xmas is coming once again and the missus has sanctioned the release of funds for a GPU for my pressie! Two years ago, i picked up a GT460 for xmas so would appreciate some guidance on finding the modern equivalent of what the GT460 was 2 years ago. On a side note, i have around £160-200 to drop on it.

Alternatively the Nvidia 660 is also quite a good choice, slightly faster at stock speeds. As others will say and you have probably heard AMD's latest driver set has made some good improvements since these benches were taken. (that is not to say that Nvidia haven't made any improvements, but there certainly hasn't been the same fuss made over them.)

My opinion if you are overclocking then the AMD 7850 is the better choice.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 660 OC Twin Frozr 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE Borderlands 2 & Assassin's Creed III PC Games £179.99
Total : £190.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

One thing people are not pointing out with these and the last few drivers with AMD.

THEY DONT PLAY SKYRIM! This is but one game i know, but the fact they have made no effort to cure the artifacting in this game shows they dont care. I bet with new releases there will be more games with such unplayable glitches.

Sure you can roll back and forth for games but do you really want to?

I really wanted the 7850 and tried 3 different cards but my computer just hates it lol, it will not work in my pc for whatever reason. Its not CPU limets as it wont run any better when i OC, surely from 2.6-3.4 it would see more fps? But it doesnt.

I know im one of the few with serious issues with this card, ive put it down to MB not supporting it. But the fact remains the new drivers speed up some games but break others, atleast Nvidia keep everything together.

Im sure at the end of the day the 7850 and 660 will play both games about the same if you dont watch the fps meter, but the 660 will play more games (skyrim).

So if i didnt play skyrim and had a better MB id go 7850.

If i dont wanna risk not being to play some games and suffer a few less fps id go 660.

Having seen the benchmarks from here

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/2.html

I would revise my suggestion and say for £190 i would have the Nvidia 660 as it comes out ahead of the 7850 in 79 out of the 88 game benchmarks run.

If those charts are spot on (which I see no reason not to believe them), then the 660 is a great card and performs better than I thought. It puts the 7850 to shame in a lot of those benches. I wait patiently with popcorn for the pitch forks though :(

The 660 is a great card, it's priced spot on imo.
Either AMD or the retailers have upped the prices though, so it makes the 660 look even better. I've got the 660 waiting in my ITX build =) (I was going for the 7850 but gave that to my brother instead :P)

They did chuck in a few Nvidia games to make it look even better lol?

I see sometimes the 660 and 660Ti is only a few fps?

Also i think the 7850 clocks will be at 860 when it can do 1050 with no voltage change easy.

You are such a Gent Tonester (need another brother?) :p I have noticed the prices creeping up for AMD of late. I see you could get a 7970 for £299 not so long back but not even close now :(

I got my second 7970 for £299 when they had the sales in July. The prices have only just gone back down to sub 300 (admittedly you're now getting a good amount of games)

No more brothers, please :D

We could be Brothers from other Mothers :p

I guess the games still keep it as a good option.

The games are FREE, that shouldnt put the price up lol?

How much do you think the 660 and 660Ti will be after xmas?, you do get some nice games with them too now.

Free to the customers but not free to AMD.

I have no clue to Nvidia or AMD plans on prices sorry Hamish :(

you could sell your old card & have more to spend?

Are those done after the new Amd drivers or before?

Before and after, look on the graphs ;)

Still its at stock clocks, so it makes difference, the 7850 clocks to 1050/1350 at stock voltage and still stays around 58-62C, this is MSI and Gigabtye cards i cant vouch for any other card.

I mean it's very possible i can squeeze into a 7950 if i turn on the old charm.

To be exact, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-065-HS

Additionally, my fingers are crossed for an advent calender sale on any of the 7950's as it is my understanding that the 7950's offer the best bang for buck atm.

Lastly, would i be suffering from CPU bottleneck due to my clocked Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz? This would lead me to ask if i would be better investing the funds in a decent mobo + ram as i have an i5 sat in the cupboard.
