That dreaded time of year....

Lastly, would i be suffering from CPU bottleneck due to my clocked Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz? This would lead me to ask if i would be better investing the funds in a decent mobo + ram as i have an i5 sat in the cupboard.

Yes, there would be a bottleneck, which would limit the returns you'd receive.

Good idea about a new mobo and ram. :)

It would depend mostly on what type of games you play most.

If you mainly just play the latest AAA FPS games then upgrade the graphic card; if you mostly play mmos, then upgrading the CPU would be much more benefitual. I mean if you got a i5 CPU sitting around collecting dust, I would say it's definitely worth getting a motherboard and DDR3 ram, as with the i5 overclocked it should help a lot on removing/reducing bottleneck.

Strictly speaking, I think you would have overall better performance with your i5 plus a 7850 than then 7950 with a Q6600 at 3.2GHz.

The games i play are things such as DOTA2, CSGO, LOL, Planetside 2 and BF3. So on that note, am i safe to presume upgrading the GPU is good? Additionally, i shall be acquiring the ddr3 and mobo for the i5 in the new year should i not get it at Xmas.

I notice that a lot of you seem to be saying go for the 7850. Is the 7950 i selected not worth the extra £80?

One thing people are not pointing out with these and the last few drivers with AMD.

THEY DONT PLAY SKYRIM! This is but one game i know, but the fact they have made no effort to cure the artifacting in this game shows they dont care. I bet with new releases there will be more games with such unplayable glitches.

Sure you can roll back and forth for games but do you really want to?

I really wanted the 7850 and tried 3 different cards but my computer just hates it lol, it will not work in my pc for whatever reason. Its not CPU limets as it wont run any better when i OC, surely from 2.6-3.4 it would see more fps? But it doesnt.

I know im one of the few with serious issues with this card, ive put it down to MB not supporting it. But the fact remains the new drivers speed up some games but break others, atleast Nvidia keep everything together.

Im sure at the end of the day the 7850 and 660 will play both games about the same if you dont watch the fps meter, but the 660 will play more games (skyrim).

So if i didnt play skyrim and had a better MB id go 7850.

If i dont wanna risk not being to play some games and suffer a few less fps id go 660.

I don't think that many people will trust your analysis on the matter though as (no offence) you don't seem to possess many basic troubleshooting skills for solving PC issues.

Not necessarily a bad thing - I don't know anything about how to fix a car if it breaks down for example - but you should probably avoid loose baseless across the board comments when you don't appear to possess an abundance of knowledge on the subject you're discussing.

It wouldn't matter if you had an issue with the 660 similarly to this. My issue is only with the basis on which you're issuing these remarks.

I'm sure the plethora of AMD owners which play Skyrim are playing it fine, I know I am. It's one of those games which plays well on practically any GPU so I definitely wouldn't be using it as a barometer of driver performance or purchasing decisions.

If all you play is Skyrim then you've probably wasted a lot of money on a 7970 as my old, old 6870 played it just fine on maximum settings (without any mods).

the msi nvidia 660 linked earlier is only £160 now, which is crazy cheap.
im considering getting one myself for an upgrade from a 460 at that price.
waiting for xmas advent calendar to finish however :p

Get the best Gpu you can afford, that IceQ is by all accounts a cracking card, the only thing that would put me off is the HIS rma(done through Ocuk I believe) which can take 4 weeks, has to go to Asia.:)

Would it also be worth mentioning that i am on a dual monitor setup? That Dual Frozen 660 looks really sweet as well. Most likely going to get that unless the advent calender comes up with something.

Edit ^^^ ok :) ignore this then :)

Are you going to be Dual Monitor gaming? The GTX 660 only has a 192Bit, not a good idea for that, compare it with 384Bit on the 7950 and 256Bit on the 7850.

For better RMA the MSI 7850 is £150 with FARCRY3 & Sleeping Dogs. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-154-MS
Which is also faster than the GTX 660 clocked up

MSI 7950 is £260 with 6 free games http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-148-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1673
Which is at least as fast as the GTX 670.

I'm not gonna talk about the first 3 games as they are not really that demanding at all, but for PS2 and BF3, I would say you should ideally upgrade to your i5 asap.

For BF3, while the 7950 would be allow you to use higher graphic settings than 7850, but performance wise the overall frame rate wouldn't be much different, as the minimum and average frame rate would be more likely to be dictated by your Q6600 (unless you force everything on Ultra and high AA, which then it might be GPU bounded). As for PS2, the scaling with the CPU appears to be quite poor at the moment with the game seem to use no more than 2 cores and people are getting low GPU usage with high-end cards and big dips in frame rate. Because of this, I would say upgrade to i5 and 7850 would most likely net you better gaming performance and experience comparing to 7950 with the Q6600 bottlenecking it.

But of course, ideally you would want 7950 with your i5.
