That Enthusiasts' Forum Advice for Beginners in Full...

Funnily enough, when I made a thread asking what car, I think one of my own suggestions was a Mondeo. Someone else suggested a different car and that's what I went with in the end :D
there was a time on here where it seemed like everyone was buying a mondeo lol

I loathe this sort of response. The whole point of a forum is written interaction with fellow members. I’d rather source opinions and knowledge from people I (sort of) know than rely on Google which is drowning in spam and fake reviews

it's one of those responses that can go either way.

sometimes folk ask questions that genuinely could be answered by 5 seconds of googling, but likewise folk also ask questions that they couldn't answer via google which gets this response.

Depends what's being asked doesn't it?

Asking "What's a Mondeo like to live with with 2 kids?" and being directed to Google reviews is crap.

Asking "What BHP does a 2.0 TDI Mondeo have?" is something you can Google yourself and doesn't need 'interaction' :p

"Entry-level" stuff - makes sense perhaps for say RC helicopters where you'd maybe want to learn the ropes I guess or perhaps Linux distros where a user-friendly distro might be useful. But then gets applied to stuff like hi-fi too where there isn't really any skill to learn - the hobby simply revolves around owning some expensive kit and frankly anyone can join in at any level.

Fortunately, there is no "hobby" around TVs AFAIK but could you imagine someone being like "yeah you should start off with this TV as an entry-level choice for the TV hobby then work your way up to a QLED, then later maybe you'd want to consider an OLED when you have the special vision you'll develop as a TV-ophile".

I guess that's were forums themselves can structure things - have a beginner sub forum or just a dedicated thread for questions that could be googled etc... or which could just have a simple answer which doesn't need much discussion etc.. and then forums don't get clogged up with repeat new threads on basic stuff + an FAQ for the common questions and a request that everyone reads the FAQ first.

Oh lord. I'm being reminded of these in real time...

The latest is a combination of...

"You get what you pay for, right? By which rationale the item that was full price yesterday is double the worth of the exact same item that's half price in the sale that started today."

And...

"Spending a lot of money on this favourite hobby of mine is massively beneficial. But also, the money I've spent doesn't confer any sort of advantage whatsoever - my success is purely down to skill."

The specifics of this are seen in every car forum in the world which isn't for a single brand - where the answer to any 'what car' question, regardless of the requirements, is either a Mondeo or a BMW 3-series.

"What you said you need isn't what I'm going to base my recommendation on. I will now explain, using terms you cannot understand. I will also, indirectly, mock your lack of spending power."

Reminds me of Sniff Petrol's Ask a Total ***** from an Internet Forum :D
