Something that I have always been guilty of, is buying components that simply look nice. Often I may find this costs me more money, but for some reason something in my head says the quality of a component can be summed up by a few simple things:

  • Size (amount of pipes/tubes/heat sinks/fans/stuff)
  • Weight (does it tilt your whole PC?)
  • Colour - Anything that's painted black is obviously good.
  • Number of X's - Anything with X in the name means it's the best, obviously.

Am I the only person who, time after time thinks "I'll have that even though its more expensive just because it looks cooler" ?

1) painting something black is just a design thing, it isnt like a black heatsink disipates better than a silver one (might even be worse!)

2) number of pins is better? so 1156 is better than 1155? :p

I have no idea why I think like this... But I do.

When I say X, I mean like GTX or Xtreme. Don't you think the X just makes things sound better?

When I see Xtreme I want to hit the designer round the head with a rubber mallet till he/she learns to spell. X makes names sound tacky, poor spelling stops me buying products on principle. Even if it's deliberate.

I only buy components if they're monotone, as that's my preference aesthetically. Black, white, and silver are the only colours you'll find in my case.

Not inviting you over to see my case then... I don't want to find you've took some spray paint to it :p

I dont buy into the whole Xtreme..XXX...OCedition...thing at all, usually they are just a small speed bump of the reference design add some silly gimmick and sold at a lot more money.

i completely agree, they bring out the normal one and then an "EXTREME OVERCLOCKED LOOK-AT-MY-HUGE-PENIS EDITION" that is slightly better spec'd with a cooler design and charge almost twice the price :D :p

i tend to go with whats best value for money rather than looks. i have no window on the sidepanel, so how it looks inside is of no intrest to me, aslong as it does its job then thats good enough.
this might be because im poor and cant be choosey, so have to go for value rather than looks.

Apart from the x thing I'm with you entirely.

I'm perfectly prepared to pay over the odds for something that is aesthetically pleasing. Same with everything in my life really.

Then in your sig it says you have a haf-x, made me chuckle. I agree though, like many other things in life pc parts that look the part and complement each other are definitely preferable imo.

It's similar with the letter "I"

A well known company throws that in front of certain things... charge three times the price of competitors and everyone who falls into the stupid marketing hypnosis tactics, rushes to the shops and buys one. Because it has an "I" .... I mean "X" :p

It's a very pretencious way of looking at things. I personally like the simpler things in life. Less in your face, less Ego. If something is so great then it will speak for itself, it wont need to shout from the roof tops to tell everyone... because you will just know.

quiet guy in the corner of pub = ex marine
loud drunk guy in your face = unemployed troubled wife beater

:D

P.S. I realise I went way over the top with my analogies.

i see what you mean, but with your analogy of certain I-products, they dont shout and scream, they are simple and clean and dont have fancy graphics and silly fonts - so perhaps these certain I-products are the ex marines ;)

If I'm honest, my last 2 coolers have been Zalman CNPS9900s purely because I think they look great and they cool OK. Also never bought a bike that I didn't think was gorgeous (others may disagree, I don't care) so I guess I'm just a tart at times!
