A friend just posted on Facebook about how awesome his new rig was going to be, someone else asked for the specs and to my horror it included a AMD FX-6100

After several comments and a facebook discussion later, hes going for a I5-2500. Phew.

What stories do you have of saving friends from hardware tragedy?

Friend: This new PC is ace, I got it from *that purple place* it's a proper gaming PC too, cost around £700

Me: Well it looks nice, whats the graphics card *Googles the PC spec* oh dear.... a £700 with a £40 graphics card, good thing I have a spare £100 graphics card that will at least allow you to play games on that "proper gaming PC"

I've bit my lip a few times, just the other day someone was saying how they had just splashed a bunch of cash on a 2.7GHz i5-2500 based gaming PC. I almost cried.

Last time I went to PCW there was a 'Gaming' PC there with a HD 5450! But it was ok because it had 1GB VRAM  This was about £700 as well :o

Not many of my friends are PC geeks :(

that little K seems a insignificant letter, but oh the power!

Oh that purple place and the orange place both have me in stitches when i go in and they try tell me that a bigger hard drive is therefore faster :/ Or try to sell me a worse gfx card than i have cos its got a shiny box they thinks its the best

I would have felt a little better if it was just a bog standard 2500, but the 2.7GHz one is the 2500S - low power version :/

It's the same price as the K version!

not just like being kicked in balls but then punched in the face for good measure, i didnt even know there was a S version, an abomination in a desktop games machine!

ive saved many people from getting rubbish power supplies, but now almost all my friends know to go to overclockers before getting a new PC, so i cant really save them from anything any more

Never ever go in there myself!

I went to the purple place 2 months ago.

They told me a 4670 was the best GPU on the market.

I never went back to the purple place.

Me neither, but tempted to just to see if it's really as bad as people say. Surely nowhere can be that bad!?

Trust me mate - It's that bad..

Went in there to check RAM/HD prices in the (tiny) 'component' area of my local purple shop, and a guy came over and after telling him I was looking for some new RAM for my desktop, he suggested some RAM as their 'best seller' that has the 'best results'.
I took a look then had to explain that this was infact a ddr2 module, and also notebook ram, and if he'd sold any to people with desktops he was in trouble..

Then I noticed some DDR3 ram on a shelf, so thought AH! Then I saw the prices of £40 or so for 2GB sticks..

Last year i worked at a placement company and over the year could not convince them to upgrade their PC's. I went back to visit a few weeks ago. The boss said: "We have got a new PC". He called it the "Powerhouse".He continued: "it also has an SSD" :)

The majority of the work done their is CAD work. I snuck away to check the spec of this 'new' PC.

Q6600
30GB Vertex SSD
4GB XMS RAM 6400 800MHz
On Board Graphics

It was heart breaking. I didn't say anything. :)

Every time I walk into PCW I feel like slapping the clerks just for having the sheer balls to tell people that what they're selling as Gaming PC's will actually run the latest games and price them as such.

I too just saved a friend from going down the bulldozer route, he opted for a i5-2500k and a 6950 instead. So lucky to have me!
