The £150 SSD question

god damn student loans, huge student overdrafts and my childish impulse buying nature! 128gig crucial ssd in the post! :( i hear good things about the crucial drives and the ocz ones too.

Heh,

I remember buying 2x 74gb raptors for £200 each with my student loan

That's atleast decided for me then...basically wait. :)
I can wait until the end of the month, but really want to get the retail Win 7 on a SSD and be done with it.

Do we know if the Crucials are using the 34nm flash they co-produce with Intel?

60GB Solid2 results, For what I paid, I'm happy.

It's a massive upgrade for my laptop, significantly reduced temps too.

Thank you very, very much for this! What are the specs of your laptop?

I've another sub £150 drive to throw into the mix; the 64Gb G.Skill Falcon II (FM-25S2I-64GBF2). Uses the Indilinx Barefoot ECO controller and Intel 34nm NAND. Seems to be tuned less for outright speed and more for small random reads. Small random writes are comparable or slightly faster than the Solid 2, I believe.

In the end I've decided on the Crucial CT64M225 drive. The decent price all in (£132) and five year warranty swung me toward that over the OCZ and G.Skill. I look forward to receiving it!

Compared to the Solid 2 benchmark above, the Crucial that I installed everything to last night has lower sequential speeds (~178mb read, ~98mb write), but higher 4K speeds (~26mb read, ~9mb write). I'll post a picture when I get a chance this evening.

I'm also wondering which of these drives to go for. It will be installed in my flatmate's about-to-be-purchased "Early 2008" Apple MacBook Pro 15" with a 2.5GHz (T9300) Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn and 4GB DDR2 RAM. It will be running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 with Windows 7 x64 as a permanent Parallels virtual machine (because his favourite media player is WMP).

OK, just ran the benchmark. Here are the results:

Obviously a different set up to the Solid benchmark posted, but a better all round result i my opinion.
