This is running at 30-40fps using Extreme-Quality config by JmanRob

It's like stepping into the future  Best PC purchase I made in years. I went from a 8800GTS 320mb to this. Anyone who owns one of those or similair and is still hesitating: what are you waiting for!

i love my 4870, crysis is playable now and looks stunning. My FPS does drop to 20 but thats only when loads of people are shooting and bits and bobs flying every where. But most of the time i get a nice stable 30 - 40 FPS which is more than enough for a game like crysis.

It's true, and it's quite strange... 30fps seems 'smooth' in Crysis. In virtually every other FPS (including HL2 ep2 which also has motion blur) 30fps would feel very jerky - almost unplayable. But in Crysis the input remains responsive, and motion appears fluid.

I'd love to know exactly what it is they've done to achieve this!

30 fps in Crysis appears smooth because

a) most people have been used to less for ages and
b) most people can't get much higher at high res and high quality and therefore suddenly a lower standard is suddenly 'acceptable'

I swear most users spend more time benchmarking in Crysis and taking screenshots rather than actually playing it.

Actually, you'll probably find it has more to do with the motion blur. Plus, its not a fast paced FPS.

And am quite looking forward to playing this through again this weekend :)

Also because it has fullscreen, realistic motion blur. The same reason why movies look smooth, even though they are running at 24 fps.

It's not just that. It's something to do with the particular implementation of the motion blur effect, and also the way the mouse input is handled.

Play Crysis for a few minutes at 30fps, then play HL2 ep2, for example, for a few mins at 30fps right afterwards (console command: fps_max 30). The difference is very surprising!

Motion blur is what makes it feel smooth at lower frame rates, exactly the same thing that makes motion in movies look flawless even though they play at 24-29fps.

60 fps would be the required minimum to get smooth motion without motion blur.

Alright

Crysis screens with 4xAA! :D Absolutely NO hit on FPS, I am like WTF! Are the 4870 good with AA or something?

Adaptive AA was also turned on (for transparent surfaces)

Ok the 4870 does nail 1280x1024, but I have also found, in comparison to my old 8800 GTX, that my 4870 makes 1920x1200 really playable, averaging around 35fps. The GTX let me play in 1680x1050 but the 4870 has allowed me to notch up to my native 1920 resolution and provide the same level of performance.

I agree with the posts in this thread that 30fps is very smooth in Crysis, but I do not attribute it to the motion blur, which I actually turn off altogether. I believe it's more to do with the overall optimisation that Crytek did on the engine. Ok Ok everyone says Crysis is poorly optimised, but is it really ? I mean look at the overall visual quality you are getting. I believe it's smooth because it keeps the FPS in a tight band around the 30fps mark, it doesn't spike to lower and/or higher FPS, but keeps a constant playable level.

Of course Warhead will answer a lot of questions also :)

All hail the RV770, it's everything the R600 should have been and more. I remember waiting for so long for the R600 and then the disappointment was bitter. I'm just so happy ATI have come back, and as the consumer we are only going to see good things from here on. I can't wait to see how NVidia come back !
