The 4K dilema.

Asking a silly question where did you get this 30hz limit from?
Wasnt that just a HDMI limit not the screens?

Edit too slow :(

Yes they are. Sure you're not going to get ultra quality in Crysis 3 with 4xAA at 120 fps, but if you want those you're going to go for multiple GPUs anyway.

It depends what you mean by "not ready for them yet" to you and others it means not having all the settings at max. Others it could mean low settings but with high fps (120+) for example.
To me (and others) it is max settings with all settings on, and an fps of 60 fps+ or whatever gets rid of stutter for that particular game.
I can live with multiple gpus that's fair enough. But its when you buy 2 high end cards like a 780/290/titanBE and cant achieve those settings in all current gpu dependant games.
For example I bought 670 sli the day they came out, every game at the time I could max out and get that magic 60fps at my res of 1440p. 670 at that time was a midrange card and of course I didn't expect to do that with a high res monitor at the time. I think it must have been 1600p or something back then?
Anyway if I had bought 2 high cards like the 680/titan at that time then yes I would expect that I could do what I did with my 670 and be able to do that on a high res monitor.
Long story short I expect 2 high end gpus (in sli/crossfire) of today that say on the box "4k ready" to achieve what I had with my 670 SLI in its early days.

I often read people saying that "We don't have the power for 4K" and I don't usually bite but being a 4K gamer, I couldn't disagree more. Sure if you want max settings in games, you are looking at near impossible for games like Crysis 3 but then that comes down to e-peen (which I love a bit of) but the sensible 4K gamer is happy to drop some AA and gets very good frames even in Crysis 3 with SLI/CF. Hell, even a single 680/7970 would cope with settings turned down and the games still look good because of the extra resolution.

Some people get a bit confused when gaming, they start counting pixels rather than shooting bad guys.

If I was a hardcore gamer the last thing I would want to do on a 4K screen is to run max settings whether it was possible or not.

These

2 x 780's cope very well - 3 Titans just about playable :D

I think the Panny 4K is 50HZ for gaming at HDMI 2.....but my Plasma is only 50HZ as well, so there's no difference there...........but this is their 1st 4K model since dumping Plasma....but i'm talking about late next year, when my next rig is ready, so by then the next generation of 4K will be miles better.

4K has come real quick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

unfortunately you're still after max quality, whatever the framerates are.

Have to say having picked up a 4K panel, doubt I will be using it or that resolution for any real gaming any time soon, the power to run games at that res is a relatively minor detail.

Atleast for me its not really upto scratch for faster paced games with overdrive artifacts very apparent, depending on game a mouse setup that is suitable for that resolution is also quite tricky, so far not really got an ideal point in some games between input accuracy for smaller tighter stuff while not having to drag it around a lot for larger moves.

I'll probably be sticking to 1920x1080 120Hz for FPS games and 2560x IPS for single player if I care about image quality.

Which 4K monitor did you get ?

Quite disappointing to hear about these problems, I was planning on picking up a 4k panel pretty soon. Hmm.

I have no such issues with my new Samsung 4K. Of course, I'm not trying to overclock it or drive it beyond 60Hz. Given his later comment about 120 Hz, I'm guessing he's got the Seiki 4K TV or the Dell 4K monitor which are only supposed to do 4K @ 30Hz.
