OK so I decided to start a new thread. Basically this is for threading/usage.

If any one is bonkers enough to to 8 core Haswell E, let us know how you get on.

I've ordered an 8 core Ivy as per the other threads, and just found a Gigabyte UD3 for £55 delivered. So I will be benching pretty hard to see what sort of core use I get. I'll also be comparing it to Sandy E and a good clocking FX 8320.

Yeah basically it's an 8 core 16 thread Ivybridge CPU with a max mutli of 23.

I know the BCLK does not strap, so high clocks are out. I should be able to get 108-110 from the FSB though.

What I'm more interested in is core use, and how it fares compared to an AMD 8 core CPU.
 
The thread title should have been called "The 8 core Intel vs 8 core AMD thread" because this is what the discussions in here will all be about and is probably the main intention of creating this thread.

Just another AMD vs Intel thread.

I imagine that's what it'll turn into, but it's not an accurate comparison really, the xeon's like the OP's I count as completely pointless.

how they handle differently? Difference in architecture really. Depends on the CPU and specs...

AMD cpus don't have hyperthreading their threads are pure core usage.

Intel cpus with hyperthreading enables a single core to basically operate like a 2 way air pump. "air" is inserted on the push and pull. This doubles the threads, using each core more.

Each cpu has it's own way of dealing with information but the outer layers are basically the same depending if they are designed to have them:

Each core has L1 and L2 Cache. They are memory in the cpu itself that are much much faster than RAM and this is were quick access to data happens.
L3 cache is a shared memory for all Cores to use, not as fast as the other cache types but still much faster than RAM.

Basically how it goes is. RAM feeds the L3 cache which feeds the L2 caches of selected cores which then feeds the L1 cache. If not enough data is supplied the cpu fetches from the RAM, then if still not enough data it will fetch from the Hard Drive - a very slow operation.

AMD tend to be an "all in one" type of cpu (with a few excpetions). In that the graphics is usually better than an intels cpu graphics, until really haswell HD4600 intel graphics intel was focused on it's cpu data calculations and then haswell is a much improved graphics section on the cpu (of course this is made redundant with a dedicated gfx card).

AMD cpus tend to be bottlenecked by it's architecture in that whilst they usually have higher clock speeds, they are unable to get data quick enough to use this. When the 1st i series came out. Intel changed how data was fetched to and from the cpu:

before they had a front side bus (FSB). Which had it's own clock speed. Every time the cpu had to get data it was relayed via the FSB, if the FSB was too slow the cpu clock speed is irrelevant as no data can be processed until the FSB clock as passed the data. When this was changed it really made AMD cpus fall behind in power over night.

As for the AMD thing? pah. Tell you what, I'll leave AMD out of it completely. It's more a test to see how the latest games and so on thread with lots of cores.

You are the bonkers one for ordering that 8 core Ivy processor just to try to prove a point.

The eight core Xeons are fairly low clocked, but not ridiculously so. The E5-4627V2 is 3.3ghz, probably 3.6ghz if the bios is willing to force turbo mode all the time.

It's a bit task dependent whether there is sufficient memory bandwidth to keep all the cores occupied, but they look like good processors nevertheless.

it's not as simple as that, because that Xeon has quite a lot of cache, it looks suspiciously like the new processor ;) ...... :eek:

but does it support a graphics card, because today i read that many dont and is it unlocked as well, again quite a few aren't.

Andy is a bit crazy but he might be onto something here, but he still has a big problem, because if this cpu is great for gaming, it's still 750 quid too much :eek:

unless i can get it dead cheap on ebay.... like the Evo SSD or the PSU :D:D:D

I'm not sure what intel are up to, but today i've seen many Xeons that could quite easily be this new cpu due out soon..... this looks like an unlocked Xeon that's been speeded up a bit and then passed onto us as a new Haswell E DDR4.............yea' ha ha

think it would even out tho? highish clocked 4core/8thread vs low clocked 8core/16thread xeon?

single threaded apps you wont see any diff

£750 is waay to expensive though,why not the x79 and a 4960x?

think they support gpu but might be locked

and they might need ecc memory aswell not sure if they support non ecc
