You need to force your game to run AA and AF. On an nvidia card you can do it in the nvidia control panel, not sure about ATi cards. Basically, go into your nvidia profiles and set up a profile for running LFS and turn your AA and AF settings up.

In CustomPC the difference between a 3.8GHz P4 and a Sempron 2800+ is <11fps on Doom 3, and that includes FX-57, 4800+ etc.
The differences on RTS games are larger, but for most games there isn't an awful lot of difference with the CPU.
Also:
You'd probably lift the minimum fps by a bit with an upgrade from 3GHz -> 4800+, but I very much doubt it'd be to the extent it was a value for money upgrade.
I don't understand the comparison there phil, he's got a 3ghz p4 and he's looking at a 3800 amd.. doesn't say anywhere (I don't think?) anything about a 3.8ghz p3 or a sempron 2800?
Either way, if local computer guy doesn't speak from said bum and he does achieve an extra 5fps thats going to be about 12% extra (over his 40fps minimum) and it'll probably be achieved a lot quieter too.. also I'm sure a 3800 could be pushed up to fx55 speeds at which point it'll eat even a 3.8ghz p4..
I'm not biased, I've had P4s (including a 4.4ghz 570J most recently) before I made the jump to amd and I can honestly say the difference is noticeable... Not the max frame rates but defo the minimum ones, much less stutter when things get heavy.
Anyway, just my 2p.. back to the screenshots!

This aint the right place for it, but you two just confused the hell outta me. Either way, i aint payin $500AU for a new cpu and mobo for an extra 5 frames.

lol... whats $500AU? about £200? not sure.. anyway, post it in overclocking and cooling or graphics cards, that'll get you somewhere.. cheers to phil.. now introduced to FRAPS and have these for you!
