The 8K Thread

Looks like I got to wait for a TV/Display using this or someone else doing the same inhouse.

Is there even any 8k content to view on TVs yet?

Just recordings on youtube/internet that are filmed in 8K otherwise it's more about the upscaling to 8K from 4K/1080p content.

Running PC at 8K native is the only time outside of the OS menu's where you're consuming native 8K visuals all the time.

Upscaling from HD to 8k is going to look awful though isn’t it? 4k is just about mainstream now but the likes of Sky still charging extra for just HD channels shows that even HD is considered special in some parts.

Don’t get me wrong, I look forward to getting a big 8k screen, maybe in 10 years time, but until there is a good amount of native content and it’s not just a rare bonus, I think jumping to 8k is premature.

Are contemporary movies filmed in 8k?

Looked good on the QN900D, can't say much about other TV's doing it, but 1080p and 4K content looked fine on it upscaled and motion clarity better than my S90C in certain scenes it has trouble with.

Still not worth even half of the asking price though.

The PA32KCX is an 8k monitor.
Good for people who need it for professional work :)

Still on the lookout for anything that actually does 8K 120hz.

Probably will be 2026 at the earlier from the looks of things.

We're getting more 8K monitors at least.

8k is too far out still for my needs, in 10 years time it'll probably be useful. For the time being there is barely even any proper 4k content let alone 8k. Even the 8k content you get on youtube isnt really true 8k, just compressed quality thats been upscaled.

once 4k content becomes the complete norm for all shows/film/sports on tv, then should work on the 8k stuff.

knowing how this stupid industry works though, we'll probably see a 16k tv in the next couple of years whilst most content is just about HD at this point

I'll concede this point, I'm purely focused on the PC experience which is achievable today, but it's such a minuscule market, there's no reason for TV manufactures to really push the envelope here.

Even the Euro 2024 streams are all 1080p low bitrate from BBC/ITV so we're a world away from live 4K streaming as a standard service option as well.

For now upscaling this low quality content is the bigger deal.

Thing is, even for PC needs - to actually visually see the differences between 4k and 8k you'll need a much larger monitor. if your monitor is 32 inches there is no way you'll see a difference between 4k and 8k.

but yeah exactly like you just said, watching the euros on tv and its barely 4k.. not sure if its just this country or if its the case all around the world, but we need to try make 4k the absolute norm within the next few years and completely phase out SD immediately and HD over the next couple years. We're at a point where 4K tv's are actually pretty common in most households, but just not enough content (especially sports) to utilize it.
