Is there already a thread for this? I would have thought there might be buy I check back a few pages and couldn't see one.

Obviously, this is for video creation. What do you guys use?

For a brief while I used a Yeti Blue -

I moved on from that to an AKG D5 -

This was quite a step up and I really liked it, but I had to keep very close to it for good audio.

I then moved on to what I use now, a Rode NT1 -

This is a fantastic mic. I gets good audio from around 10" away with very little noise at all.

I am wondering about moving to a shotgun mic though, just to clear the mic from the desk, giving me space to operate, so to speak.

The obvious choice was Rode VideoMicPro (or the Plus maybe) but I opted for the Azden SMX30. I like the idea it has two sets of mics. Mono for recording someone right in front of camera and then stereo for more general filming -

I've actually now for the Rode VideoMicPro Plus on order, I'll try them side by side and send back the loser.

If anyone is interested I can upload some samples of either of the last couple.

So, what do you use?

Beyer DT 294 headset - Excellent for use in online chat
Sony ECM-77B - Industry standard laveliver mic used in almost all broadcast studios. Insanely good performance, which is to be expected considering how much it costs.
Behringer ECM-8000 - Calibration mic that I use for checking speakers
AKG D58 - Really old talkback mic, received for free. Poor frequency range but good for what it was originally designed to do
Sennheiser ME66 + K6 - Superb for noisy environments, has a nice tight pickup pattern and excellent response. Outclassed by the much more expensive Sennheiser 416 which is the go to boom mic in broadcast.

Can anyone assist. I've bought a Senneiser MKE2 on eBay and it's not recognised by my GH5 -

The reply from the seller is -

I’m not overly familiar with cameras but what is likely is that it is not providing the appropriate power voltage to the mic.
This is usually very low, I think the mke2 is around 7.5v. Note this is not 48v phantom power which equipment often provides - could blow the mic!

You can buy in line battery units for this kind of thing that work. Or if your camera has XLR/ phantom power you can buy small plugs that convert phantom power to the correct voltage level.
Either way you will need something that is designed to handle lavalier mics - another option is a wireless microphone system like the Sennheiser ew100.
Do feel free to ask further questions.

Does anyone know if that's correct? If so, what should I buy? I've tried googling and I'm getting a lot of unrelated items.

**EDIT** Also, got my Rode VideoMic Pro+ yesterday -

I've been toying with getting a dynamic microphone for YouTube usage for months now but I've come to the conclusion that my GoPro Hero 7 Black on a selfie stick is all I need for the time being.

You have purchased a lav mic with nothing to put it into. Most if not all lav mics need phantom power.
You cant just plug it into the camera, because the camera will have very limited software settings to control the sound and it will peak hard and blow the mic.

Mics like that go into AVX type units which are powered either via battery or XLR/+48v connections (Requires the DMW-XLR1 on the GH5, in order to get the dials and options you need to control the sound)
