Was doing a spot of pond maintenance when these two popped out to say hi..

Be careful that's not a crested newt (looks like it might be). There's huge fines for disturbing them.

There were about 10 or so in the pond, but I think they were all either smooth or palmate newts.
Unfortunately I had to drain the pond to repair the lining, so disturbing them was unavoidable..

If they are crested that excuse wouldn't fly, unless you have a conservation license. Supposed to do it out of season.
