Noel Sharkey, professor of artificial intelligence and robotics at the University of Sheffield, believes an unrepresentative sample of black people is one possible reason for the error.

There is a bias problem in AI, ironically the below issue was from an Asian camera manufacturer:

Google had a similar (albeit rather worse in terms of PR) issue - the quick solution was to stop anything from being classified as gorillas, chimps or monkeys... even actual gorillas, chimps and monkeys...

The angle of the shot and the fact she was pouting probably didn't help with the classification there either.
