I always thought a staycation was a holiday you have from home. i.e. You stay home but take time to visit places and do things nearby.

Going on holiday in the UK is still a "vacation", no?

Going on holiday from a UK perspective is just going on holiday. A vacation is an american term for going on holiday. Split the word up vac(ate) as in go somewhere else instead of staycation where you holiday in your own country.
