I had to find an image to post just so I could ask you what that plane is? Is that rod sticking out of the nose for refuelling? Or did it fly into some scaffolding?
 
I believe it's a Russian Tupolev Tu-95 . . .

It just suddenly hit me looking at this that it has propellers. I'm so used to seeing jets I think I hadn't really considered they might still be making modern aircraft that were propeller driven.

They ceased production in 1993 (due mainly to Russia going bankrupt).

It's essentially the Russian equivalent of a B-52 Stratofortress, speed isn't that important, it doesn't need to get lose enough to get shot at as it's essentially a flying cruise missile launcher. Where it excels is range (15,000KM without any refueling) and economics (fuel and maintenance costs are low).
