Games for Windows Live
13 November 2008

Microsoft has updated Games for Windows Live, which is basically the PC version of XBox Live. It now has a new interface among other new features. To obtain the update, log into Live using any game which supports it, such as:

Fallout 3

Flatout Ultimate Carnage

LOST PLANET COLONIES

Gears of War

Halo 2

Shadowrun

GTA 4 not out yet

Quantum of Solace

Yeah noticed this earlier when I went to play Fallout3. Lot quicker than before and also gives you more options. Plus it looks a lot slicker as well.

MS are starting to ramp up this program. I mean who on earth would buy any console game if it gets released on the PC, cheaper & with better technical abilities!!

Fanboys :p...

Personally I'm not that much of a fan of achievements really, I just love statistics though.

it took them a long time... looks much better though, microsoft got plans for introducing a steam-like service. as long as its free, its all good.

It's free for PC users, XBOX users still need to buy GOLD, PC gamers no longer do.

i have a bad feeling about this.

it's most likely only free as no one would use it as there is plenty of other free ways of doing what they do.

but in time games will be made to only play online with windows live, which will be when they start charging and we have no other alternative but to pay

Well it's built into GFW games so it's not like you have to have an special install like you do with teamspeak/vent/STEAM etc!

Just log into Live like you do MSN when the game loads and bam, everything is there.

Will always be free now. Few months ago MS reversed the charging policy so unlikely to change back again as they know gamers would totally abandon it as all the other multiplayer is free. You can already play cross platform on a few titles as well vs X360. When they do Halo3 & GOW2 ports hope they include x platform. Lost Planet Colonies Extreme Edition is the only PC game I have which supports this at present. It works very well but not many people into it yet.

MS have big plans for this service as they know by attracting more PC gamers they are doing themselves a favour. Think most of the Xboxlive services are eventually planned for PC so you will be able to buy points & also download DLC & movies etc etc.

AFAIK the Games For Windows Live program is free to publishers who wish to include it on their games as MS know its another way to gain market share by having a strong PC platform. The main reasons Ubisoft & EA have not yet used this is because you need to get your game to support all known widescreen resolutions as well as both 32 & 64 bit and if gamepad support is included the 360 controller must be an option. All good stuff as the PC is crying out for gaming standards.

Achievements are statistics!!

Not those kinds of statistics though.

Achievements is stuff like carry a gnome all around and put it in a rocket at the end of the game, look how cool I am I have done that... Or, OMG LOOK ive finished the game !!!

I'm not interested in that type of info, I just want to know how long I played something, at what time of day I usually game and what games, are there any patterns like rts only on Mondays or fps only in weekends... Or what radio station in game xyz do you listen to most ?

Etc... I just want to know for myself what I'm doing, for how long, when, and what I like most, what I've played most, what I've played most in a week, etc... The rest is just pointless info imo... I don't need a place to show me, you've done this and that you have carried a gnome into a rocket in ep2. I know I've done that, no need to waste bandwidth on that. I am interested however, when I played ep2, how long, at what time of day usually, what game I played directly after,, how long have I played game x in the past 3 years, etc...

Kind of like Google's statistics, like it tracks at what days and what time of day you do most searches, or click at particular links often...

It's the reason I like things like lastfm, it shown patterns about myself, or why I think steamcommunity sucks compared Xfire, at least xfire remembers my gaming history for ever, not just for 2 weeks like on steam... Or Google, how it shows I'm way too active late at night for my own good...

But oh well, as long as they don't start jamming apps like xfire in games and only voluntarily allow us to use windows live, I'm fine it it...

I have a feeling they may try this, but pc is slightly different from the 360 in we have steam and others, not only that them pesky pirates as well “shakes fist”.
