The Alternate History Thread.

If Germany had won the WW2 then i guess we would be driving BMW's and have curry wurst for breakfast...doesnt sound bad :P

Umlimited speeds on the Autobahn too :D

Joking aside, what if the US had taken it on themselves to join the war sooner? Would have meant fewer losses for the allies surely? They would have sat back on their arses if PH hadn't kicked them into touch right?

If anybody fancies some reading, my current toilet book is 'Virtual History - Alternatives and Counterfactuals' by Niall Ferguson. It's pretty good.

Correction: nobody since Genghis Khan attacks Russia and ends up better off. :p

My limited understanding of it is that it certainly wasn't that far fetched, but Germany had already ballsed up a few key events that could have made it easier. They failed to take Britain (moved away from the airfields and onto cities and towns). Then they were delayed by having to help the Italians against the Greeks. Had they been able to start off earlier they could have taken it.

I'll give you three to ponder:

What if the Roman Empire hadn’t fallen and there hadn’t been a dark age?

What if the forces of the Ottoman Empire hadn’t been defeated outside Vienna in 1683?

What if the Russian revolution had spread across the continent of Europe?

The Nazis wouldnt have needed the Irish to supply their War machine they already were well supplied and stocked.

The Irish would have just made it easier for the Nazis to be supplied in a logistical sense.

and i'm not underestimating Dad's army either but ultimatley the Whermacht would have prevailed in the end.
I dont think the irish would have been helping the germans in any way, quite large numbers of irish men were serving in the british army, as they had always done, and as many continue to do so.

I think there would have been assistance from die hard republicans, (and im sure there likely was in reality), however i very much doubt it would have been official government policy.

did a representative of the Irish Government not offer condolancies on hearing news of the death of Adolf Hitler ? though I'm sure that this was diplomatic protocol.

Its wierd how the Nazis had all the numbers of the Jews living in Ireland though.

Anyhow trying to gauge reality through the mist of Anglo/Irish propaganda is perplexing to say the least.

Even if I'm a Plastic Irishman myself! :D

You do realise how weak we were then dont you ?

Also the Nazis had a willing ally on these Islands being the Irish so they would be ok for supplies etc.

The germans would only have to deploy a few divisions and that would have been it.

In a way you are not really acknowledging how close we were and how Churchills "speach so much owed to so few" was so literal.

I'm sorry, willing ally? I certainly don't remember that in my history books. I remember us being neutral though a lot of Irish fought with the British in the war. I also remember reading about any German prisoners being held captive while the allied troops were sent over the boarder.

We were certainly not allies of the Germans though some fruit thought it would be a great idea to send a letter of condolence to Germany when Hitler died.
