The AMD Driver Thread

I just watched a Hardware Unboxed video about shader compilation, and there's a bit where they show a 9070 XT performing better than a 5090 due to a driver feature that AMD added recently. I thought I'd mention it here because if you read "opinions" around the internet, you'd get the impression that AMD is always catching up, not doing new things themselves. Yet AMD *does* do things that have a real, sometimes even massive effect on the player experience, they just don't have the same level of marketing applied to them. When your £800 product performs better than your competitor's £6000 product because your drivers are doing something better, you should be letting people know. Reviewers should be making sure to run benchmarks that reflect actual player experience, so this sort of thing is picked up.

Here's the relevant part of the video, where the 9070 XT with the shader compilation driver thing achieves 10x better 0.1% lows than the 5090, which is the difference between horrendous stuttering and perfectly good performance:

I don't know, some people on this forum have said that HUB don't know how to test GPUs and that their videos are rubbish, so not sure if I believe this. :D

Does anyone know which drivers introduced this for UE4? The note on the AMD website seems to suggest 26.9.2 added support for UE5 but that UE4 was already in there.

If this forum has taught me anything it's that if a test is showing a piece of plastic to be good then it must actually be bad because I don't own that piece of plastic, But if the test shows my piece of plastic to perform well then the test is good and my piece of plastic is better.

Luckily I have both a 9070XT and a 5070 and a copy of Tiny Tina so decided to try it out and yep I also see it. On the 5070 the game has way more stutter than on the 9070XT , it smooths out a little after playing for a while but it never quite hit's the 9070xt smoothness imho

Anyone point me in the right direction to find out why I am now getting driver timeouts on every single start of windows..

Had steam big picture auto load and it would turn to a black screen, turned it off, and now I need to quickly enter task manager to acknowledge the timeout and use the c.
Latest from amd site, 29.2 I think it is..
9070xt
9700x
ASUS Creator x870e m/board.

Thanks

think I might have fixed this issue..

Steam settings, turned off hardware gpu acceleration, restarted steam, turned it back on and no driver timeout.

Thinking back it did start after I changed the steam startup video..

Is anyone able to suggest driver settings for a system with:

5800x3d
9070XT
32GB RAM
Alienware AW3432DW (connected via DP)

Is it as simple as selecting one of the pre-baked profiles, are should I be applying some custom settings?

TIA

I've always done a custom global experience for everything. I then have one or two items that use a specific custom game profile. Mainly for forcing AFMF2.1. Then I amend settings in game, to try and get over 60FPS at 4K. I also where possible cap the max FPS in game as well.

This is my global setup (Gaming > Graphics > Global Gaming Experience > Custom):
Adrenaline1.webp

And then an example of a custom profile for a game, using AFMF2.1. These are game specific as you need to know the low/high FPS values to be able to create the values:
Adrenaline2.webp

I've been playing around with the AMDNR program made by the same guy, looks pretty good and you dont need to install any Nvidia dll's with that one as its using AMD tech.

I'm still a noob with this stuff but its fun playing with it, something different to do, Second Life avatars suddenly look a lot better anyway lol

Also been using the same one on my 9070XT, Works really well.

AMD and Microsoft are working on this same technology for Project Helix which will later become part of a new DX standard.

I'm thinking because going to be part of a new DX standard Nvidia are also involved and they have jumped the gun, named it DLSS 5 to "scream look at us" its why it works natively on AMD's GPU's, its designed to. Nvidia didn't even create it, Microsoft and AMD did.

It's honestly shocking how well it performs on the 9070XT, With frame gen and FSR4.1 set to Performance at 4K I was seeing north of 80FPS in the likes of Onimusha.

Nv locked and loaded, AMD still at the paperwork stage trying to obtain a gun license...:p

To be fair AMD are more interested on getting this into the next gen consoles, I'd wager this is part of Project Amethyst and a selling point of RDNA5 where as Nvidia 5000 series owners had to wait until the end of the generation to get Neural Rendering in a half assed state and then improved upon months later.
