Post workout shakes - required or a load of hokum?

Common sense tells me that providing I hit my protein totals per day then it really shouldn't matter?

I've just read an article that suggests you don't really need a post workout shake.

So - what's the general consensus?

If anyone has any links to studies done on this subject I'd be grateful.

I have read studies debunking the myths, but you will have to look for tjem yourself (try pubmed or sciencedirect).

If you have a decent diet, mind. ;)

I generally stick my carbs in post-workout (as either juice, cake or a shake) because I would prefer my body not to have to spurt out insulin more often than it needs to, and as circulating glucose is high during and post-workout, mightbas well nail it in one go (provided it goes in with a decent mix of salts to allow your intestines to actually do something with all that sugar)...

It's complete crap. Ignore it. If anything ingesting food so soon after working out will do very little or the opposite as your body won't be in a state to process the food.

The only thing that will help to regulate blood sugar is something like fruit or something carby. But not loads of it.

Sleep is where you grow.

Load of rubbish - the body needs protein to rebuild or build muscle but it won't make any odds when you ingest it.

It's a myth propagated by the supplement industry saying that you need to take it. They get professionals to endorse and make comments about their supplements. It's so grossly exaggerated and spread that people know see it as a de facto scientific notion.

The supplement industry is massive and a monolithic force that skews science to help support their industry.,

HOWEVER!

Reasons to have a shake post-workout:
- if you're hungry and won't be able to eat for a little while
- as another "meal" to balance macro totals
- it is a good time to get carbs in, and shakes are convenient here
- same applies to creatine, which is best taken with carbs

Just because a lot of the broscientific benefits aren't real, it doesn't mean you shouldn't have a shake if it's convenient for you.
