What happens when veterans of the mainstream gaming industry decide to break from the corporate machine? Awesomeness, that's what. At least, that appears to be the trend so far. Stoic is the latest in a long line of studios composed of ex-industry veterans. The Banner Saga is their debut production and so far, it's looking pretty darn fine.

The developers have promised that we will be able to 'travel landscapes straight out of an animated film' and that you will get to battle 'painstakingly hand-animated foes in strategic turn-based combat'. Outside of combat, it looks like you'll also be making 'decisions with real consequences in conversations with people you'll actually care about'. A free multiplayer standalone of the combat gameplay is scheduled for release in summer with the single-player campaign to follow shortly after.
Short answer: role-playing meets turn-based strategy, wrapped into an adventure mini-series about vikings.

Travel through stunning landscapes straight out of an animated film as your party escapes what could be the end of everything. Battle painstakingly hand-animated foes in strategic, turn-based combat. Make decisions with real consequences in conversations with people you'll actually care about.

The Banner Saga is a mature game aimed at gamers who appreciate art, story and strategy. Hope you'll join the caravan.

Couldn't resist the early beta and helping the devs out (worked out around £9).

Game is a lot of fun, mechanics are straight forward and i'm winning more than I am losing (3 to 1) so I must be doing something right at the moment. The game has quite an interesting turn mechanic. Bascially you have 6 characters and the turn alternates between your char/enemy char/next char and so on. If a char dies then the alternate turns continue this actually works well in terms of keeping the opponent in with a chance. It actually seems to work quite well keeping the evemy alive but wounded until it makes sense to finish them up.

Loving it thus far :)

Has anyone bought this?

I got it at the weekend and I'm liking it. Love the artwork and general atmosphere of it. Can be a bit confusing keeping up with the written dialogue, but a great game so far.

I bought it, like you say the artwork is top notch, kinda reminds of all the animated films i liked as a kid. The dialogue and combat can be quite clumsy at times but will definitely will play this through at the weekend

Is anyone else playing this? I've been playing for a handful of hours and so far it's great. Really pretty, good turn-based combat, engaging story with rpg-like decisions to make, characters to level, items to gather etc. Exceeding expectations so far :)

Do you have any updated news on this mate? Reading that has made me so ****ing angry, it was bad enough when they patented the word candy, but if they go after saga too, then I hope to god Anonymous brings them down.

Just to think there were and still are to a degree, very slightly capable people attacking and hacking Steam, when they could be destroying this **** heap of a company.
