Does anyone have a link to a site explaining the different types of effects pedals, and what sort of sounds they make?

I tried learning the guitar a few years ago (only a simple guitar and amp, nothing special) but i got a bit fed up when i couldnt get it to sound the way i wanted to. So i was thinking of trying again to learn but this time buying a effects pedal to make it actully sound a bit better (i know it wont make me a rock star just by getting the effects, but having my guitar sound like a proper guitar would keep me playing it). The problem is, i have no idea what effects pedal i need to get the sounds i want. From what i read so far, if i want to get a a metallica sort of sound, a distortion pedal should be used, but what effect would i have to use to get the sort of sounds that dragonforce guitarists make?

Not really the kind of thing I'd listen to here he's explaining some of the effects.

Bass question here.

I'm trying to tune to DGCF but well... I just ended up breaking a string.

I have a basic Korg tuner and I was trying to tune the second string to G but it just wasn't coming up on the tuner. What gives? :s

My Line6 Spider Valve 112 guitar amp arrived this morning. :)
This is my first tube amp so I want to make sure i'm using it properly. In the instructions it says to put the power on, then wait 1 minute before switching the speakers on. My mate recommends to wait 3 minutes as it will make it last longer. Is this true?

It doesn't mention anything about switching off. Is it ok if I just switch the power and speakers off at the same time?

Thanks

i;m not sure if i'm allowed to make threads or what but this one looked the closest

Anyway

Is there any pc software that i can use to make music? / samples / etc? fairly easy to use the better

What kind of program do you mean?

Make music (record, edit) - Pro Tools if you have an M-Audio device, otherwise Cubase is good too, Audacity is good and free.

Sampling - as above, maybe Sony Soundforge and Adobe Audtion too.

MIDI sampling - Propellorhead Reason is a brilliant program for synthesisers / sampling, and Native Instruments B4 is great if you want a well-modelled hammond organ.
