The Benchmark King: How Futuremark Keeps Performance Score

The graphs aren't an overlay anymore. The games are an underlay.

I have used futuremark benchmarks exactly once. I much prefer unigine cause they are pretty, have nice music and can be left to loop.

As for AMD vs nvidia I will say that I have been sorely disappointed by both.

I don't understand the people who seem to plaster their games with fps counters, gpu and cpu usage stats and various frame time graphs all the time. Nowadays I rarely use such things, I just play the damn games instead of worrying about every little bit of performance all the time.

I'm surprised Matt can even see the game behind all those graphs :p

hahaha that's so true. :D

I've started playing Normal mode (:o) in Battlefield 4 these days. It's so much easier than Hardcore. Look at my last 2-3 pages of Battlereports. If i'd been playing Normal since the start my K/D would be a lot better i reckon.

I've actually stopped using the cpu+gpu rendering overlays as i need to see the mini map (hax) of normal mode when i play. I still have the fps running in the top right hand corner mind. I've also started using vsync now too and running my cpu at 3.6ghz. :o

It's a handy way to remember how awesome Mantle is compared to any current DX11 implementation.

There are a lot of things in Futuremark benches that are quite useless.

1. They should be capable of running at realistic resolutions by default (1080p, 1440p, 1600p and 4K)

2. Even the minimum resolution should not be bottlenecked by the CPU even when using highend setups. If you can not get the best out of the bench with an Air/Water cooled CPU @5.0ghz it is useless. What is the point of running 3dmark11 with LN2 on the CPU to get the best out of the GPUs, it is of no value to the 24/7 user.

3. Futuremark are very slow at recognising the latest drivers.

4. It is too easy to cheat and get to the top of their Hall of Fame scoreboard with totally ridiculous scores, do they check these scores.

5. There is often too much junk and demos that come with the benchmarks, is anyone really interested in the extra tests Vantage does ?

6. Some of the benches favour AMD why I don't know the reason for and the fault could be with NVidia. What happens is NVidia cards really don't like running things that have ultra high fps (over 500fps but this can vary) this also happens on Unigine benches.

Benches should be a bit like running Crysis 3 maxed out, you are never going to get huge fps but the cards are going to get tested to the maximum which is what we want to know the answer to.

+1

I have one very simple test for gaming, if it runs and looks ok that is enough.

It's about time you removed those graphs. :p

Don't forget you can move the position of the mini map.;)

Next week I am going to get the bones and rattles out to try to get Mantle and Thief to run @4K on my cards.

DX11 is a lot better @4K.

It was not one of AMDs better days when they launched the 290X for 4K with 4gb of VRAM and then allowed game Devs to be sloppy with memory usage in Mantle at high resolutions.
