The best air cooler?

38c load on a dual core that puts out nearly 70watts of heat? whats the efficiancy of that heatsink? im smelling a misreading sensor there
Maybe, still I'm impressed with it, apart from having to lap the base. Massive surface area and it pushes a lot of air. Loads temps dropped 10C from late 40's changing to this HSF. I've got a thermistor epoxyed to the base. Reading about the same range (under 40C) and the 20C delta from cold is correct and in line with the external sensor, it idles 8c over the case. Case temps only just above ambient (18C). Also the temps from the older HSF now on an ASUS board are similar late 40's. Either way its still 10C better than a Hyper 6 that weighs in at a solid 1kg of copper with 2x80mm fans running at 5000RPM.

I'd bet the TR on this is better than say a XP120. Which with a good fan can get to 0.15C/W.

With a 170/FX60 (110w) as an example. P=V^2*R

(Current Vcore/1.3V)^2*(Current MHz/2400 MHz)*110W = OC wattage

(1.475/1.3)^2*(2700/2400)*110W=131W

Thermal resistance formula:
cpu dT = (cpu load T) - (room ambient T)
thermal resistance = (cpu dT) / (cpu watts)

0.15*131=19.7
19.7+18=37.8

dT=20C is about right up to 140w with this HSF.

(Yes it's flawed. Not all the CPU heat is radiated by the HSF some goes out the back. The 110w AMD figure is the specified maximum for all dual cores and is probably lower. But then the thermal conductivity is less than perfect. It also assumes the resistance seen by the power supply, i.e voltage changes remain constant. But you get the idea.)

you've got problems then.

opteron 148 cooled by a scythe ninja.

 you are right, I check the TIM and guess what Id left on the plastic film alllllllll this time.

Edit

24C idle @ 2.4 1.45v
38C load on both cores
