I figure its the E6320 or E6420 as its pretty new so should still be a good overclockers wheareas the E4300 and E6600 have been available for awhile and apparently the newer chips aren't so good for overclocking basically its a lottery depending on which stepping you get wheareas the current E6320 & E6420 steppings should all be good.

Well you do kinda have a point although you generalize to much. Not every chip will give a 100% or even 50% OC but that does not mean they are no good.Even at stock a C2D is still 1 hell of a fast CPU.

Well if I was buying a CPU now with the intention of overclocking it I would go for an e6320 or e6420 as they will probably give you the best chance of getting a good chip... I`m not saying you still can't get a good E4300 or E6600 but your probably more likely to get a good e6320 or e6420.

By I good chip I mean a E4300 that can do 2.6-2.7 ghz, or a E6420 that can do 2.66ghz or a E6600 that can do 3ghz. Not extremely high overclocks but reasonable.

My E4300 (just bought last week) went straight to 3ghz out of the box ;)

Although it does require more volts to get much higher so I am happy with 3ghz :D

Same here - I'm well chuffed with mine

I`ve decided what I`m going to do... I`ll get a P35 DS3 and risk a new but cheap E4300. If it goes to 2.66ghz 333x8 or 2700mhz 300*9 I`ll be very happy. I`ll probably settle for 2.33ghz if thats all I can get out of the chip I get. If it doesn't do at least 2.33ghz then I`ll sell it in July and get a Penryn 2.66ghz CPU for £ 93.

Actually the E6420s would give you a lesser chance of getting a good clocker because a lot of them are chips that couldnt cut it at higher clocks...

How about a 4300 that happily runs at 3.4ghz all the time perfectly stable. :D :D :D

I'm only at 2.8ghz, but i've only spent 20 mins familiarising myself with a C2D bios (gigabyte S3) and so far it's been completely stable (14hrs orthos with case fans on min). It's the easiest overclock i've done. If I get the chance I'll see how far it can go without needing better cooling, but at 2.8ghz it puts my once uber opty 170 @ 2.7ghz in the shade.

Forgive me if I have got the wrong end of the stick here. First you say that the 6320 and 6420 should clock well as they are new, then you say that the newer chips aren't so good for clocking. Unless I am mistaken, these two statements are contradictory.

All that aside, these chips are astonishing - 50% overclocks and upwards are the norm and if you do get an e4300 you will be very unlucky not to get it to 2.7 GHz with ease. (Assuming a modicum of common sense on your part)

I got a Celeron 360 as an experiment really, and am at 4.25GHz stable, and should be able to get 5GHz plus. Hopefully should be pretty nippy, although I have been disowned for having a Celly :p
