The best game developers...

It's not something i've really looked into over the past few years but recently as i've matured more and actually started to appreciate the effort that goes into games i've also noticed there flaws and sometimes 'lack of effort'.

So top developers...

1. Valve
2. Activision
3. SONY
4. EA
5. Blizzard

So who should i be looking at for new releases?

+1 for Valve.
In fact, not just Valve - keep an eye on Steam in general - I reckon there's gonna be some cracking indie games popping up on there over the next year or so.

EDIT: They have Portal 2 up their sleeves. And probably more Half-Lifey offerings.

I agree with this. Maybe not huge epic titles, but very imaginative stuff.

Valve. The only people who can deliver a game 1 year late, yet everyone forgives them because its just so dam awsome!

They are the only developer I can think of that hasnt taken the "lets be like Halo" aproach and stuck to the "lets make games for people with a keyboard and mouse"

I hate to say it, but Valve. I really don't like CSS for example, but can't deny it is a bad game. Plus there gems like portal and tf2.

Would like to say epic, but their current *we only care about consoles* stance has really put me off of them.

Rockstar get a thumbs up from me.

Simbin who have done the GTR and GTL games also get a vote, nice polished games.

Some of the best ever were looking glass studios and Ion Storm imho

Apart from bandwagon jumping I'm really not sure why Valve are so highly regarded as a game developer. Half life 2 et al / TF / CS are over rated laurel resters - the only new game from valve worth it's salt was portal which was great fun and original but extremely short. it seems all valve can do is sequels.
 
Bethesda + Bioware.

Also, Mistwalker. It's not a PC development house, but I'm throwing them in there anyway because they deserve to be there. Not put out a lot of titles yet (they were only founded a couple years ago) but what they've done so far has been quality. I'm expecting great things from them, so watch this space -- they're going to be big.
