The best mouse?

I got the RAT 7 MMO yesterday to replace my aging mx1000 wasnt sure either to start with but I love it now after having an evening to tweak and play with it

The rat comes with different rears and sides so can be swapped about to suit also dont worry about huge dpi, anything over about 4K is more than enough

I looked at them all and decided to go for the RAT 9.

I noticed, in the shop, that there were two different RAT 9 boxes on display. One was 5600 DPI and the other, seemingly newer model, was 6400 DPI.

So I assume a lot of places, OCUK included, are selling the old model?

Eames, is the one you got 5600 or 6400?

I got mine from the pen on the chain shop beginning with A and I got a 5600 dpi :(

It doesn't exhibit any tracking issues usually but on a few (can count on one hand) occasions it has stopped tracking sideways movement when moving left/right. There has always been some dust or hair in the sensor though when this happened and blowing on it solves the problem.

The mouse has taken a while to get used to, I'm still not used to the weight and vertical movement is difficult to do quickly in games. It is simply very heavy, and I'm a big lad.

Took a while to find the right adjustment settings, I've settled for default palm rest @ 2 clicks back, thumb rest angled out not much just a tad and the default pinkie rest. I wanted to use the extended pinkie rest but I can't get on with it.

If money isn't an issue, then the 2012 edition of the Razer Mamba would be my recommendation. Having a wireless mouse with a response time of 1ms is pretty awesome, and it is arguably one of the best ergonomic mice on the market.

Using it on a Razer Scarab mouse mat, the glide is effortless and I'm yet to encounter any issues with it after 2 weeks of use. I love the option of being able to use it wired for the odd occasion when I've run down the battery and forgotten to put it on charge.

Brilliant mouse all-round, and it is quite a looker. Again, if money isn't an issue, then this mouse really is hard to beat. Got myself a QPAD MK-85 to compliment it and I can really feel the difference when on BF3 MP.

Deathadder. It will always be the deathadder, ALWAYS!

I had the first ever Saitek Cyborg, I thought it was terrible and after a while (just like the RAT5, RAT7...) it began to dawn on me that this is something only children would buy.

Objectively the best mice are the Microsoft WMO, IMO and IME. And the Deathadder/Abyssus (smaller, 3 button Deathadder).

Everything else has sensor flaws of some kind. Except maybe the G400 but it's pretty new so I dunno.

I'm currently leaning towards the RAT 9, as I think wireless may actually be nice...

I've read plenty of reviews of the RAT 7/9 and overall they seem to be held in high regard.

The Logitech G700 looks rather nice too, but I haven't read much about that one yet.

My current concern with the RAT mice is that the rear part of the mouse seems to be raised quite a bit (though maybe you can lower it). With the Lachesis I rest my wrist behind the mouse - if that makes sense, and then sort of have my hand over it, rather than actually on it.

I assume this is the case with most mice, but it's difficult to tell!

I have a G700, and it's very nice. Very comfortable and all the extra buttons are extremely useful. I like to bind keyboard combinations to them for things like "next/previous tab" in firefox or other applications that use tabs.

I'm generally getting on well with it, however I have one minor niggle and one more serious issue:

The minor niggle is that the rear part of the mouse, that you slide on and off, has a bit of 'give' in it, so it wobbles. It's generally not an issue but it would be better if it was a better fit. The more extended you have it, the worse it is.

The thing that's currently annoying me is that when I'm moving the mouse, it sometimes seems to lose tracking for a millisecond, meaning the cursor doesn't end up where I want it to go. I have a Razer Mantis mouse mat and it's quite dark, so maybe it doesn't get on well with that? I've got a white paper pad that's smooth and would work as a mouse mat so I'll try that and see if it improves.

Thankfully I can return it within 30 days and swap it for something else if I wish, but I'm looking to keep it as I do like it.

Thanks for all of the other replies (incase you missed it, I've already bought the RAT 9 :p), but I may reconsider if the above issue keeps cropping up. I see a lot of people are very fond of the DeathAdder, why is that? It looks fairly similar to the Lachesis that I had previously and that doesn't have the issue the RAT 9 seems to be suffering from. If the Mamba performance is brilliant, I may be tempted by that...

I'm using mine on a wooden desk and it tracks fine on that.

My palm rest wobbles aswell so I think its normal, but when I'm holding the mouse in my palm I rarely notice it.

The rubberised palm rest accessory I got is a very bad fit and won't "click" and moves freely with a bit of force. But I found it felt weird anyway.

Have you checked theres any dirt in the sensor? The very rare occasions when my tracking hasn't worked theres always been something in the sensor. I just blow on it.

I have heard the mouse tracks better on coloured surfaces, there also seems to be a bit of mixed opinion as to whether a hard or soft pad is better.

I also highly reccomend when adjusting the thumb rest, to have the sniper button in a comfortable position under your thumb. You don't want to have to stretch your thumb to get to that button, for me the rest is as far back as it goes. In fps games its a revelation :)

I have checked the sensor for dirt, it's not related to that.

From reading around various sites, most people say the Philips Twin Eye sensors absolutely hate cloth mats and don't get on well with them, and the Mantis I have is typically cloth. :p

The Lachesis was flawless in comparison so that would make sense.

I have a smooth white notepad that I'll try as a mouse mat shortly, and I'll see if the tracking is any different on that. From a brief test there does seem to be a positive difference when using the white pad.

It's just that when moving the mouse fairly slowly, the tracking does go out a little bit more often than not and it's a bit irritating to say the least.

I've just returned from the shop with a 2012 Razer Mamba. It was £20 less than the RAT 9 so that worked out nicely, it usually costs more!

Hopefully I'll get on with it better.

I didn't like the Mamba much either. The shape of it doesn't suit me and it seemed a bit buggy at times.

So, on to this:

You should have stuck with the Rat 9, it took a week for me to bind with the mouse completely.

The tracking is different to other mice, in a good way I think. It feels lighter on its feet if that makes any sense. I feel its perfectly suited to fps games.

I did feel it was a ergonomic mess in the beginning but now I feel its quite comfortable, but not the best I've ever held in my hand.

Anyway enjoy your sensei, I'm sure it will be a great replacement.

I did like the RAT 9, but it just wasn't for me.

A new mouse is tricky enough to get used to without having what are mostly pointless adjustments. I also felt the tracking was just poor, I'd try and click on buttons and it just wouldn't go where I wanted, and no amount of fiddling helped.

The Mamba improved on it significantly, and the Sensei has now improved on the Mamba. It's far more comfortable and I haven't been using it long.

I think, due to my grip style (fingertip mostly), an ambidextrous mouse suits me more. Pre-defined grooves in the shape and so forth just make it feel wrong. The Lachesis was ambidextrous as well.

I probably could have lived with the RAT 9, but I didn't really benefit from the wireless (due to my desk), and it just seemed a bit pointless given the price. I managed to get the Sensei and the mat for less than the RAT 9 by itself.
