The best players of all time

hmmm let me think.....

Maradona - sorry guys but he was brilliant
Cantona
Le Tissier - passing, shooting, he was the best at everything, except pace :D

They may all be fairly modern players but thats because i have only seen these play. I doubt a lot of people in here actually saw pele play much. Plus football has changed a lot nowadays - its a lot quicker than it probably once was - more athletes. So i feel its fairer to say that the best players ever have been in the more recent years of the game :)

Pele scored 1,281 goals in his professional career. I think that puts him in the running for being the best player ever... He scored 78 goals in 91 international appearances too... :o

Who do you think are the 3 BEST football players of all time? This is really tough for me personally a I never got to see most of the greats play. The closest i've got is dodgy tv clips from the past, but from what I've seen....

I'd say i've seen one of the best
Eric the King!

...

Pele
van Basten

There's a lot of players i can think of to put in 3rd,but none that really stand out from the rest,so i'll stick with two.

he also scored 97 goals in something like 92 games for brazil thats a pretty mean record

Yip,

But a lot of those matches where against nearby country sides and how many games did he score something like 5+ in that game.

Don't get me wrong, he was fantastic but there are others that have acheived greater at the highest stage. i.e. Van Basten etc.

I remember reading a footie magazine last year that done a survey to identify whom was the greatest footballer of all time.

Van Basen was 2 or 3 I think but Pele was near 10. It was based on the games they played, major competitions, Man of the Matches etc.

So if he played 500+ games against crap but scored 500, it still didn't mean he was the greatest because those teams were not considered qality teams.

I don't remember seeing Van Basten doing the business in the latter stages of the World Cup though, Pele has.

I dont remeber Pele taking a nothing club in Italy and singlehandedly winning the Serie A title

or Taking a mediocre Argentina Team to World Cup Glory

Or At the Age of 34+ Taking a really bad Argentina team to the semis before unfortunately being found guilty of Drug Abuse

Maradona Was king he plied his trade in the best leagues in the world and was exceptionally successful. He didnt spend his career playing in one of the most medicre leagues in the world BRAZIL.

I know,

We'll settle with George Best being the greatest of all time.

And managed to retire at the age of 26.

Done well and still drank 5 bottles of whiskey for every goal he scored.:D

he did the buisness in the WC finals THREE times though didnt he, the one time he was missing for the WC and england won it ;)

dont get me wrong maradona was brilliant as well, he was a bloddy cheater as well but no need to get into that :p

pele played way before all of our time (maybe except big kev and Rotty :D :p) we cant appreciate how good he really was, yes he scored against crap teams he also scored against brilliant teams

Van Basten
Bobby Moore
Lev Yashin
Garincha
Platini

It'll be interesting in 5-10 years to see wheter players like Zidane or Ronaldo will be in lists like this. Zidane is definitely good enough, and has won everything that needs to be won to prove his quality. Not fair to put him on ths list while he's still playing though.
