Happened 5 years ago today (or at least that's when the forums came back, can't remember how much downtime there was now!)

It's interesting to see how the forums have grown and developed since those days.

/Waves to all the old timers on the forums :)

I remember that! Back in t'day etc...

IIRC the forum was up & down like an Essex bird's knickers with stuff corrupting all over the shop, so the decision was made to wipe it all and start from scratch.

I'm sure someone else can provide a more technical explanation though :p

*waves

I remember the nuke well, it took me almost a year to get back on too as the admin changed the rules on sign up with emails, I dont use ISP mail so i was screwed, only had a hotmail address at the time and it took ages to find one that worked..

...Oh well!

Explain, what happened?

The database was pretty clogged and the forums were pretty much grinding to a halt.

They basically killed the forums off when it was back on vB2, and brought it back on vB3, also removing all permabans/bans and everyone re-registered (complete with ban-amnesty iirc).

Gibbo overclocked a set of SLI Voodoo2's and staff had to be issued with Ray Bans.

IIRC there was no placeholder for your name meaning that anyone could register any name. I remember rushing home from work to reg this, and now I think, who the hell would want this nick :p.

I seem to remember there were placeholders for some names, dons etc.

Though it was on different software and then vB2 afterwards?

Didn't vB3 only get released like 18 months ago?

edit - ok, vB3 was released ages ago but fairly sure it was only a recent change here...

I remember the big nuke.

Someone tried to pinch my username, but Don Werewolf sorted it out. Us furry types stick together. ;)

I was at work at the time, and when I tried to re-register, it wouldn't allow me to register as Confused, hence registering ConfusedTA (at the time I was a prominent member of TeAm AnandTech distributed computing, and this was just an additional forum I used, now this is one of my main forums, not visited AT for ages!)
