I did a quick search, and it seems to me there's a glaring omission from the stockpile of 'The * Thread', and that is cheese!

What's everyone's favourite cheese? Where can you grab the best deals? What do you like to accompany it with?

My favourite cheese is, and has been for some time, Epoisse. Strangely, it doesn't suit red wine all too well. Apparently the French like to drink a wheat beer with it. Personally, I think it pairs very well with an aged rum.

I can't say I have a single favourite as, for me, cheese is about having a variety of tastes and textures on your plate. I generally go with a good red wine or port if we have any lurking from Christmas. My dessert is almost always cheese as I have to avoid the sweet stuff these days.

Mostly gets ours from Sainsburys in the weekly shop, their taste the difference range is pretty much always excellent. We used to visit a specialist cheese shop in Chester at weekends but a combination of the city actively discouraging city centre parking and being parent taxis killed that.

EDIT: Stupid question removed. Confused Illgresi with another forum member.

I like most cheese, including things like Gouda, Yarg, Stilton (and other blues like Roquefort) and even Cottage. Though mild cheese like Edam, Feta, Mozzarella etc only really have their place in specific uses as they need to play off other things.

Favourite cheese for me has to be a really strong Cheddar, it may sound boring but I love it. One that is impossible to slice because it just crumbles and so strong that your mouth hurts when salivating.

Eaten either on it's own or with different breads and/or crackers/biscuits. Tomatoes and olives are a good accompaniment to most cheese as well as some chutneys.

One thing i hate though, is cheap supermarket cheese. Things like Tesco own Red Leicester for example, the **** is that ****?

i liek most cheese and a good cheese board should have a large selection.

however, I am very partial to a good cambozola or other high flavour but still creamy cheese, also extremely ripe brie and other such cheeses.

on their own or with a cracker.
chutneys go well with extremely acidic cheeses, to tame them a bit and balance out the flavour.

and I have a good butcher/cheese shop although rarely go there as its expensive and parking is next to impossible, so only for special occasions or dinner parties. But it's a butchers on one side and cheese counter on the other side.

There's nothing wrong with cheap supermarket cheese. Smothering your food in £20/kilo cheese would be retarded.

I can eat cheese all day. I eat it with soda bread or oat cakes. My favourites so far

Blue - Barkham Blue
Camembert/Brie style - Tunworth this is superb Camembert but ridiculously expensive. Burwash Rose is a must try also
Soft - Celtic Promise, stinky and delicious.
Cheddar - Montgomery's. Lancashire Bomb and Black bomber are non-cheddars worth trying if you like a strong sharp cheese
Hard Goat - Gouda. Tesco's "Finest" hard cave one is great also
Soft Goat - Tymsboro
Kill people with your breath cheese - Camembert washed with Calvados
Italian style cheese - Pecorino Romano.
Ewe - Rosemary Manchego

Other delicious cheeses - Yarg/Garlic Yarg, Mexicana, Aged Red Leicester.

The worst cheeses I have tied -

Edam
Sussex Vegatarian Pasta Cheese

Cheddar - Montgomery's. Lancashire Bomb and Black bomber are non-cheddars worth trying if you like a strong sharp cheese

I have to agree with the Black Bomber option

I really rate Aldi for their cheese.

Two stand outs are their aged gouda and buffalo mozzarella. Not normally a fan of their as I find them a bit bland, but their mozz is the best I've tasted in England and the gouda is super nice if you leave it on the counter and let it get all sweaty.

I'm really struggling to find a good comte though.

You definitely meant Aldi yes ? not Lidl [EDIT - yes saw it this morning in Aldi - specially selected cheers ]
I like Aldi 18month Caledonian cheddar , will double check for their gouda.

Mimolette, beaufort, +1comte(18/24mth), tomme, are my gotos in France.
The French equivalent of OC's must have always had this thread, but (sorry) the UK is a bit of a cheese desert, would be interesting to know % of cheese shelf space in typical French supermarket vs uk
edit +1 w/oatcakes use Bill's Rona oatcakes

I like a good cheese board. Typically I'll get A tunworth, epoisses or vacherin, some compte and some Nottinghamshire blue.

For biscuits for cheese I like Peter's yard sourdough crispbread. They're like a wholemeal version of a water biscuit which is about 100x crisper.

Paxton's truffle Brie is cheese enlightenment. An absolutely godlike cheese. I would walk through fire to get my hands on it.

Otherwise the best cheese is a good cheddar. Great for eating on its own, great for cooking with, great for grilling.

The problem is a good many cheeses are so variable in strength from one batch to another, the biggest joke has to be 'seriously strong cheddar', it used to be o.k but several recent ones inc a so called vintage version were so mild I took them back for a refund

Hmmmm, cheese....so many nice ones.
Goats cheese, nice mature cheddar, especially ones with salt lumps in, cranberry wensleydale, Port salut or how ever it's spelt.
I stay away from the strong smelly stuff though.
