The Christmas Tree Formation and David Moyes

If Man Utd don't get European football, which I think could realistically happen, do you think you will be able to sign the right kind of players ?

If I was Luke Shaw, I wouldn't be picking Man Utd over Chelsea/City/Liverpool/Arsenal at this point in time...

they are still a bigger club than all of those and with the so called clear out 1st choice can be guaranteed unlike other clubs

The prospect of not having champions league football at a club such as ours isn't as bad as perhaps teams such as tottenham, everton.

We have the financial clout to pay the fees and wages, without risking too much on FFP like City/Chelsea might be sweating about currently.

I would like to think most players with decent management could see the bigger picture.

Without CL you think they are a bigger draw than Chelsea, City, Liverpool, etc?

My view on the whole European football thing is that missing potentially one season probably isn't THAT big a deal for many players, if they are getting enough zeros on their paycheque. Taking the case of Luke Shaw, he's a teenager and in his position moving to MU would be enough of a step up for that stage in his career, he's got many years ahead of him in which he can be playing in the CL.

If Evra leaves then he would be first choice at MU, whereas at Chelsea he arguably might not even be second choice never mind a regular starter. Man City, who knows, Pelligrini seems to rotate Kolarov/Clichy depending on the opposition so I imagine he wouldn't play every week there either. Liverpool would make sense if they offloaded one of their LBs but even with CL football I doubt they would match the wages on offer at OT. Also it remains to be seen whether moving forward beyond next season Liverpool or MU are best placed to offer CL football.

Someone like RvP on the other hand was a different scenario, when he left Arsenal he was 29 and needing a club where he would be challenging for trophies and playing in the CL.

Interesting thread... I would just point out though that none of the formations listed so far include Adnan Januzaj. United fans - where do you think he best fits into the squad? Do you think he will still be with you next season?

What about Tony Kroos (if United manage to land him)? How does he fit into things?

I still feel Man U are going heavy on "playmakers", and are weak in defence / central midfield.

Personally I would say no - not until the club stabilises.

However they can certainly offer bigger wages than Liverpool / Chelsea right now, and for Luke Shaw in particular they offer an immediate solid first-team place (rather than the year or two of rotation he would get at Chelsea).

For established world-class players I don't think Man U will be an attractive option until they get back to regular Champions league status (unless they're hunting for cash). But for an 18 year-old with a lot of potential they could be a good long-term bet.

I think Shaw will end up at Man U, even though I'd love to see him at Chelsea. With FFP and a rumoured £50m bid for Diego Costa in the summer I'm not sure that Chelsea can afford the £30m+ he will go for (unless David Luiz and Lukaku are sold etc).

Evra is, and has been, a liability, for a couple of years now. He's great going forward but is slow to get back and positionally, he's very poor.

My over-riding concern is basically that it's almost a whole new back 4 for next season(vidic gone, evra likely, ferdinand to old, Smalling and Jones constantly injured)

I would love to see Jones/Smalling cement their place as the 2 CB's for the forseeable future but they are too injury prone.

Chat of £200 million to spend etc, but needing at least 2 CB's, at least a left back, a couple of quality midfielder etc - that's never going to happen with 200 million.

Of course it could be done for for £200 million ffs! United's record buy is £38.4 million. If they were to spend that on each individual signing for next season that £200 million would get them 5 players! Ie 2 new centre-backs, 2 qualit midfielders and a left-back! Fortunately for them, they aren't goin to need to spend £40 million on each new signing - they may spend that on a couple of players, but the rest of the signings will be made up of lower value/ younger players who haven't yet become the players that command those sort of fees!

Jesus, if any club spent £200 million in the summer I would be staggered if they didn't at least compete for the league title!

Not that I think Utd will spend anywhere close to £200 million!

IMO there is no need for a huge re-build. The players we have are great, but are being mis-managed. They have no desire. No confidence. No need to win. Just play. Lose/Draw. And pick up a pay-cheque.

If he buys new players, they will probably revert to this behaviour.
I want to point out (except Januzaj), every single player in our team has dropped in performance.
Even the 2 big signings this year, havent done anything special.

I dont think Moyes knows how to inspire his players.

Sack Moyes.
Bring in a manager who has previously won trophies.
And you will see the existing team (without spending a single penny), competing for a top 4 position.

Even if we gave Moyes £200m to spend, I'd only just about be confident of squeezing into the top four. He's a very limited manager and he's not going to cut it. Tactically the only thing he thinks about are what 2 subs to make at the 60th minute. Even if he got the formation right, he can't motivate the players adequately, and he can't craft a plan before a game that will beat the opposition.

£200m or even less than half of that to a real top class manager and we could be challenging again. The board have to do the right thing and put him out of his misery.

Just think about it, tactics aside, we've only won games where the other team simply haven't turned up, or bits of individual magic have dug us out of holes. We haven't won any close games.

I do feel sorry for him as it's not all his fault, he's been thrust into a job he isn't capable of doing. Then again, he's being paid millions of pounds to do this job and just shrugs his shoulders at the end of each game and says we did really well and we'll try to do better, it's actually a bit sickening.

You may be on to something:

-Big Belgian chocolate coins you could have bought far cheaper a month ago but ended up paying through the nose for at the last minute
-Got a star secured up top but everything underneath comes crashing down when you give it a shake
-Lots of expensive decorations awkwardly crammed on to the same branch
-Very welcoming for visitors
-Seemed a lot more entertaining when we were kids
-Should have been completely dismantled by the 6th of January, but come the 1st of February you were still sat there wondering why you haven't got rid of it yet

I saw this video.

Now, what is very interesting is that as the fans walk past the camera, the shouts of "Moyes out!" is becoming very common.

A month ago, I was not hearing this, so openly. Remember, when the plane flew "that" message, people gave Moyes a standing ovation.

I think the sentiment is changing.
