The coming tide

I don't want to rub things in too much :D but a stock E6600 barely takes 15 minutes for a 2610 frame - 1500PPD. I'm expecting a Q6600 to take about 7 minutes.....

On that point - just a heads up to the Q6600 buyers out their make sure your new chip is a SLACR with the G0 stepping, not the current SL9UM (B3) version. Less volts and higher temp ceiling (overclockers dream)
That seems somehow appropriate. :D

Your not the first to notice - the internet is awash with that 'joke'

Edit: nice work biffa - I didn't think AMD could clock by that persentage :o (never own one myself - only got into OC'ing when the 805D came out)

the [email protected] here at work do a frame every 37mins - that 2.5days - so if you hit 30mins your doing well.
Edit: 22mins on a 2605

If I had the money I would :(

I have to wait until the 17th of August before I can afford one. Maybe a little sooner.

Rubbish. You're after one anyway!

If I could drop one in my Mac I'd order one now but I'm finding it hard to justify a new rig and give up OS X at the same time. Decisions. :(

I think I'm going to wait at least until I know the specs of the new iMacs.

Really? :p

Right just bit the bullet.. :D

Days after getting my 165 overclocked and crunching at a reasonable speed I'm switching to Intel as I've just ordered a Q6600, 2GB ram, a new mobo and a new cooler. Mind you this is all mATX so I won't be clocking too high anyway.

My VMWare box won't know whats hit it :D Heres what I got

Product Name Qty Line Total
Gigabyte GA G33M-S2 Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard 1 £59.99 (£59.99)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail 1 £149.99 (£149.99)
Zalman CNPS8700-LED Aero Flower CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/775/AM2) 1 £27.99 (£27.99)
OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit 2 £39.98 (£39.98)
City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri): £8.25 (£8.25)
Order Total: £336.29 (£336.29)

Now to put the bits being replaced on the members market.

That spec is very close to one I almost bought myself. I went with the G33 board to save on power costs. :D

Will 1GB of ram be enough?

I got the G33 because its a good overclocker, and I will be overclocking a bit. Its in an X-QPak case which is quite breezy and cool with the 165 in it.

I bought 2 of the 1GB kits because it saved me £10 :D (I know 2 1GB is better than 4 512MB but hey I'm a skinflint :D)

Sorry, it does actually say 2. I was distracted by "VM" and "1GB" . And I'm a fellow skinflint. :D

It'll be a good little folder that. When I was speccing I tried to get the maximum crunching for the smallest power draw and that board seemed to fit the bill. That board does come in a full atx form if I recall correctly.

Alas, the money I had put aside is now going towards a new car so I'll be eating your dust for a while. I'll be back though... with 8 cores. ;)

edit - about 14 spelling mistakes. :(

Err, it was an arbitrary number (base 2 of course ;)) but since you mention it, I might wait for an 8-core chip. Can't be too long, can it? :p
