The computer games market

no i very much dout a code on a usb device that matchs the disc can be broken as every game and dongle would have diferent code to authencation , like 1 code per game else it wont work with another code that matchs the usb device code

1 person buys, rips the cd/dvd, rips the usb, puts on internet, done, code matched and ready to download for the whole world.

Highly doubt it, Pirates wouldn't buy any games even if they couldn't download them, nor has downloading em stopped any buys.
The downloaders are mainly people that just don't have money for games and wouldn't buy them anyhow, even if they couldnt download games.

@ mbk, that's rubbish, everyone I know that has a console, has a chipped console, very easy to find people to do it for you, consoles are even easier coz you let someone do it once and then it'll work for ever, no need to do anything anymore, while on pc's, you'll need to do something new for every game and for every new type of protection.

fair play, ive just never been interested in chipping my consoles

ok, don't take ''everyone I know'' a good indictation of the average console people, everyone I know persoanlly with consoles, are all between 8 and 20 years old :p. They basicly buy a console, just survive on borrowed & gifted from mates games untill they get to chip it, once chipped they just get any game they want, untill the console breaks or a new console is out.

Hell, my last mate that bougth a 360 just got 1 game with it ( gow), and till now hasn't bought any game (been quite some months now) , but instead played out like 20 games by now that were borrwed from someone, I know he won't buy any games for it anyhow, the only game's he'll be getting is from mates for 2-5 days untill he finds enough money to chip his console...

This is a common myth or 'excuse' I often see bandied about, but in reality I know plenty of people who download copy stuff (films, music too - not just games) who could easily afford it. Only this week people were chucking stuff around at work, and I'm talking people in the high tax bracket not paupers with no cash. Edit: as you are dutch, high tax bracket means earning >€50000/year

I think it's incredibly naive to think that piracy doesn't harm sales - if there was no alternative but to buy games I bet some of the serial pirates would buy some games.

Don't be fooled by the fact that most of the games people acquire illegally they probably wouldn't rush out to buy - there's still AAA titles being pirated too such as HL2, Doom3, Oblivion, C&C3 etc which I have no doubt would be bought by some of those pirates if they couldn't get hold of them through means of non-payment.

I do think it harms sales, but not as much as the industry is trying to make out.
Perhaps what you say is true, but the ppl I know dont make 50k a year, more like 1000 k a year, because it are mostly 16 year olds etc...

Tbh, I regret buying most of the games you mentioned, HL2 was just too short, doom 3 i got bored, oblivion same story, c&c3 is imo the worst c&c game out to date, its worse than the average RTS game out these days...
Most games are the same these days, hardly anything ''new'' comes out, the only quality games that really are good, are usually too short, hl2 for example, same story for the GTA games (ok I admit, sa is an exception)...

As mosehn says, mp games are the only ones people will consider buying these days.

Myself, i just stopped it for a few months, had enogh of buying games I don't play anyhow, old games f tw :D, really, these days's games I hardly play as long as I used to play mohaa online or age of empires 1 and 2 online.

Piracy has a big part to play in it, small developers lost out in a lot of money which they could have used to develop new games, i think at one point team crytek had to get a partnership with EA due to a lack of funds.

I see it as piracy came about because game developers got to greedy with the prices and people started thinking. hey why pay so much for a game.

I find it unlikely that game developers are harmed enough by piracy to not be able to afford to design any other games. They make money by the billions once they hit a successful game. And if they dont hit one well, they make it by the millions instead! haha.

I worry about a partnership with EA to be honest, they seem to destroy every game they partner with. But these guys seem highly dedicated so i gues it should be fine.

i cant see why they dont make a sort of dongle for usb and with every game that comes out you put the dongle in to install then after that you can take it out , because downlaods would be useless without a hardware dongle authencation, this would solve piracy

anything on the dongle which authenticated itself would be downloadable and you could place it on your own pen drive or similar. without making the thread about piracy we all know these guys just sit there and love creating work arounds.

Whether or not they are good games or not doesn't really matter; either way, games which are part of such huge franchises from well-respected developers achieving big review scores are going to sell like hot cakes if they aren't available for download.
