Exactley my sentiments on the issue. I don't agree with Penski's idea that it's just a bit of cloth. I think if you ask people from some of the old eastern bloc countries that have spawned new countries such Croatia etc, they take great pride in their new identity or for some of the lesser nations who compete at the Olympics. The whole flag ceremony means they are equal for that moment in time against some of the biggest sporting nations on the planet.

Perhaps then, Penski and others are displaying traits of that the idea of national identity is dying?

If people want to spend their own money on a flag so that they can burn it, I have no problem with it at all. Rob put it perfectly - no one has the right to not feel offended.

That's a bit PC isn't it :/

I don't think anyone has the right not to be offended, personally. It would be ridiculously unworkable if you tried to implement a system whereby things were "wrong" if they offended people.
There is a difference in people having the right not to be offended and people having the right to deliberately offend.

Possibly. Remember we have gone through a period of stability internally so the idea of our flag may not hold as much value to us. Whereby the American civil war and the Confederate states breaking away was around 1861 iirc. Therefore what it means to them maybe somewhat more poigniant and relevant as it's only a few generations ago
