Firstly I am entirely in agreement with the first person who states a tyre thread is pretty lame, but I'm posting one for two reasons.

a) mjt has constantly asked me for more details about the tyres I bought
b) It was noted in another thread that there was recently a new revision of the CS3 but that nobody knows what the difference is or how to tell. Therefore I figured it might be useful to find out.

If you have a set of CS3's, please post a photo of the sidewall along with the production date if you know it, and the purchase date if you don't. Then we can try and work out when they changed to the 'new' version which will help people buying them.

Mine (Production Date 0210):

Some of you might be interested to know why such a diehard Eagle F1 fanboy has now completely moved away from them.

Simple - I got a really good deal on these. Found some chap who had bought a set of 4 brand new CS3's and then for whatever reason not been able to fit them due to getting rid of the car. So he had 4 CS3's in a set size. So I bought them... and after postage, fitting and balancing have had the four fitted for....

£425

They were, of course, brand new with stickers (I would never buy used tyres).

They are almost £700 on Camskill. At that price it was silly not to give them a try really - especially as I was about to click 'Buy' on £570 worth of Eagle F1 Assymetrics (And had considered the Conti's before when Camskill had a deal on, you may remember my last thread).

So, it'll be interesting to see how they compare with me beloved Eagle F1's. I've not really done an awful lot since I've got them but so far the only immediate differences I've found are that there is marginally less road noise than with the Eagle F1's. I have had the DSC light flickering a bit more than I used to but I'm currently putting this down to the fact they are still new and have not yet worn in.

If anyone cares I'll keep you updated as to what I think but do bear in mind that one of my stongest opinions is that user tyre reviews are worthless as nobody knows quite how credible the 'review' is :p

That said, post your CS3's and lets see if we can work out how to identify the 'new' ones. Quite why they didnt just call the new ones CS3A or something I will never understand.

Tyre porn! :p

Not quite CS3 talk, but an itching question since I'm due to change my tyres. When new tyres are on, is it okay to just drive as normal? Or are there restrictions? For example, first hundred miles keep off the motorway etc?

Thanks

Edit: Fox I thought you were fussy with regards to the way new tyres are storred? I'm assuming the guy you purchased these off knew what to do?

That's an astonishing deal. I paid roughly the same fitted for 4 new 17"s :(

Did the seller have a Mercedes? M0 are Merc-spec tyres.

No, they were purchased for a BMW. I did a lot of homework before buying them and it seems that in some sizes *all* CS3's are Merc-spec. All the 265/35/18's you can buy from Camskill or Mytyres are MO, for example.

I'm not actually aware of any Mercedes model which takes this particularly obsecure tyre size - and I guess its this particularly obscure tyre size which helped me get a good deal. Expensive to buy retail, but worth a lot less when you are trying to sell them privately.

The reason why I was coy with the price at first is that I didn't want to count my chickens - I wanted them to have arrived and be fitted before I started getting properly chuffed about the deal :D

As you said I'm quick to question people on financial aspects of car ownership so I am more than happy to be utterly transparent on the costs associated with running mine :)

In the EVO test they state that the new tyres are the one with a load rating of 84 other values are for the old version of the tyre. Not sure if that applies to the size used in the test though or even just the specific version used which is for the MX5 and Peugeot RCZ.

And you say I drive dangerously  ?

on a sidenote - how often do you clean your car Fox? it's immaculate

He will have cleaned it specifically to take those photos over and above the normal cleaning regime unless he happened to have just washed it. Either way, there is no way in hell he would have taken the photos with the car dirty :p

He drives a 3.0.

So ? If I get a 3.0 thats gives me the right to be so heavy footed that DSC has to kick in ? Most threads I make he says this scares me that scares me how do you make traction control kick in that. He shouldn't say that when he does the exact same thing, and more importantly, he put his car in a ditch once...

Are you trying to say that if I drove a 530i, and said dsc kicked in often, it would be alright ?

You have moaned in disbelief how I make my traction control kick in on my car sometimes while you are doing the exact same thing.

Have you ever bought new tyres or only ever got used ones cheap from your uncle in Poland where they fit them for £1.20 and you get a ride of their mrs while your there?

Mould release etc makes them slippy as heck for the first miles.

More power, more torque, more slippy tyres = your going to have the DSC light come on.
